11/8/2024
IWP Ep64 Brad Kurtz - Vine Farm Ridge and Gloria Ferrer. Vine Farm Ridge is Brad and his families new project in the Livermore Valley, he has lots of great info and insight into the area from his previous work with Wente. He’s also the director of Vineyards for Gloria Ferrer and can tell us all about farming in Carneros for sparkling and some still wines. The first wines from the old vineyard are pretty amazing and it’ll be a super interesting project to follow and support the project as it grows. IWP Ep63 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 7 - The Wine Men

11/1/2024
IWP Ep63 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 7 - The Wine Men - Today is part 7 and the conclusion of my series on the California Wine Association. This episode is titled “The Wine Men” If you’ve stuck around this long, I hope you enjoyed it. Today we’ll discuss some of the winemakers, blenders and tasters of the CWA. Those responsible for what was actually in the consumers glass. The CWA was run like a real business of the time so much of what we have are those business records but I want to try and piece a little together about the other side of the business. IWP Ep62 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 6 - The Dark Days

10/25/2024
IWP Ep62 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 6 - The Dark Days. This is part 6 of my series on the California Wine Association. Last time we saw the CWA rebuild post earthquake and fire as they constructed the largest winery in the world, Winehaven, on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Despite that, they still gorged themselves on wineries and vineyards until it was too much and they had to get rid of them. The first true downturn of the CWA. During this time they also dealt with the deaths of the men that led the Association all those years. And then prohibition hit. IWP Ep61 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 5 - Winehaven

10/18/2024
IWP Ep61 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 5 - Winehaven. This is part 5 in my series on the California Wine Association. “WineHaven” Last time we saw the CWA battle against the “Calamity” as the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire were called. Much of San Francisco was destroyed and the CWA suffered huge losses of wine, over 10 million gallons plus offices, cooperage, warehouses and cellars. The amount of wine in their country cellars throughout California, as well as some heroic action from members of the company would allow them to continue. But the rebuilding and a short 1906 crop would place added pressure on Morgan. IWP Ep60 Jeff and John Perlegos - Perlegos Family Wine Co.

10/11/2024
We’re going to take a quick break from the California Wine Association series to talk with the Perlegos Brothers, Jeff and John about Perlegos Family wines. You’ve probably had wines made from their grapes by Maître De Chai, Fields Family, Bedrock, Haarmeyer, Sandlands and Sabelli Frish. Since 2020 they have been producing their own wines. Most from fruit they farm and others from some of the best growers in Lodi. The wines are balanced with moderate alcohols and bright acids. We talk about their upbringing and Greek heritage, their Stampede and Cherry house vineyards, why they started producing their own wines and the Assyrtiko plantings they farm. We recorded this episode at the Lodi Wine Commission offices and the Lodi Visitors Center. It’s a great place to try and to purchase wines from Perlegos and other small Lodi producers that might not have a public tasting room. IWP Ep59 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 4 - The Calamity Edition

10/4/2024
IWP Ep59 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 4 - The Calamity Edition. Today is part 4 in my series on the California Wine Association. “The Calamity Edition” Last time we saw the CWA gobble up their competitors after the end of the wine wars. They absorbed wineries, vineyards and wine houses. When they couldn’t purchase the entire company, they would get half. Allowing companies to operate with the veil of independence would keep the antitrust folks away. It was all fair game and they came out with control of over 2/3rds of the wine in the state. Today we see how they do in a battle against mother nature. 9/27/2024
IWP Ep58 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 3 - Shopping Spree. This is part 3 of my series on the California Wine Association. Last episode we saw them battle the California Wine Makers Corporation in the so called “Wine Wars” The CWA was able to come out on top, as the winemakers Corporation was never able to truly work as 1 entity. The CWA was also able to hang on as wine prices dropped and dropped, making it tough to survive for those The production of California wine is firmly in the CWA’s control now. IWP Ep57 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 2 - The Wine Wars

9/20/2024
IWP Ep57 The California Wine Association (CWA) - Part 2 - The Wine Wars. This is the 2nd part of my series on the California Wine Association or CWA. Last time we focussed on why and how the CWA came to be and some of the key players behind it including Percy Morgan, Charles Carpy, Samual Lachman and Kohler and Frohling. Incorporation was finished in August of 1894, just in time for harvest of that year. The wine firms involved already had San Francisco based offices and cellars and the CWA would make use of these, utilizing the best aspects of each. Today we’ll look at the “Wine War” where a conglomerate of winegrowers would battle against the CWA for control of the California wine industry. They were called the California Wine Makers Corporation, I might refer to them also as “The Corporation” or the CWMC. This one is deep dive into the politics of the late 1800's wines business. IWP Ep49 Samantha, Michael, John - Viano Vineyards

7/19/2024
IWP Ep49 Samantha, Michael, John - Viano Vineyards - Today I’m talking with Samantha, Michael and John who make up the 5th generation of the Viano wine growing family. This generation has been taking over more and more of the running of the family winery from their parents, like they did before. Viano vineyards has been producing estate wines since the 40’s from their dry farmed and head trained Zinfandel, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah and more vines. All grown in the rolling sandy hills above the winery in Martinez. The wines are well balanced, natively fermented and see mostly older oak or sometimes redwood. It's been a true family winery for nearly 80 years. You find their wines at Vianovineyards.com and follow them at Vianowinery on Instagram. IWP Ep48 Matthew Keller - Don Mateo

7/12/2024
IWP Ep48 Matthew Keller - Don Mateo Matthew Keller or Don Mateo as he was sometimes known, was one of the pioneering winegrowers of Los Angeles, moving there when it was still barely more than a dusty pueblo. He wasn’t the first but was among them, we’ll get to his contemporaries in time. We’re going to hear a lot of quotes in the episode today, because Keller was a very prolific writer. The quality and quantity of his wine writing is matched by only a couple other winemakers in Pre-Prohibition California. His search for knowledge and his language skills made him a centerpiece of Los Angeles area winegrowing in the 1850’s to 1880’s.
