Reeva Steenkamp, a 29 year old South African paralegal who graduated top of her class and also had a successful career as a model, was murdered in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013, shot multiple times by her then partner Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius, who at the time was an internationally known professional sprinter and national hero, claimed it was an accident, that he thought he had been defending himself against an intruder breaking into his home. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide with a term of only five years in prison and a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction. That verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa who convicted him of murder and increased Pistorius' prison term to 13 years and five months on appeal by the state. Now, to the shock and dismay of Reeva's family and loved ones, after only serving half of his sentence, Oscar Pistorius is going to be released on parole with a number of conditions. After decades of ignoring thousands of child sexual abuse reports going on under their watch, the Boy Scouts of American finally had a reckoning in 2010 when a brave former scout came forward to file a lawsuit and testify. Kerry Lewis was only 11 years old when he was repeatedly sexually abused by an assistant scoutmaster named Timur Dykes. Even though Dykes had previously confessed to his superior, another scouting leader, to sexually abusing 17 boys in their troup, Dykes was allowed to continue with the organization and continue to abuse Kerry as well as others. Colette, a mom with a young son, living in the New Brunswick region of Canada, didn’t know how to recognize the red flags in her ex-boyfriend and had no way of knowing he was a ticking time bomb who was planning to murder her, in front of her child, in plain sight of her parents’ house who lived next door. “Making A Murderer” the Netflix documentary about the 2005 murder of 25 year old Teresa Halbach near Green Bay, Wisconsin and the prime suspect in her killing Steven Avery took the world by storm in 2015 launching many viewer theories and passionate camps as to what may have really happened to the young photographer and who was responsible for her horrific murder. Avery, who had been wrongfully convicted of a violent sexual assault in 1985 was exonerated when DNA evidence proved another man was the true offender, and released in 2003 after serving 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Just two years later, Steven Avery would again be the focus of an investigation, this time for Teresa's murder. The filmmakers of “Making A Murderer” Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who funded the docuseries themselves long before Netflix agreed to distribute it) have always said their premise was to follow Avery's murder trial as it unfolded for their cameras based on who they had access to. They have always said they were not there to investigate the crime nor to take a side, but to document the process of the justice system as it happened in front of them. But Ricciardi and Demos came under intense criticism by those who thought they left out the most important details of the case. We finish our conversation with Cathy DeBuono, who talks about her near-miss experience with Victor Paleologus, the serial stalker, rapist, and murderer of Kristi Johnson. Cathy tells us how Paleologus approached her at the same Los Angeles mall where he would target Kristi Johnson four years later. She describes the eerily similar ploy he tried to get her to meet him at a Hollywood Hills location on the pretext of a job interview. Fortunately for Cathy, she walked away unharmed, but she never forgot that encounter and when she heard about Kristi’s murder she came forward and was a witness for the prosecution in his trial. On Feb 15th 2003, Kristi Johnson, a bright 21 year old college student, was approached at a mall in Los Angeles by convicted rapist Victor Paleologus. She had no way of knowing he was not who he said he was, no way of knowing he had seven previous convictions and had just been granted parole. All she knew was this affable, helpful seeming man who said he was a movie producer started talking to her about the entertainment industry and offered her an opportunity to apply for a job. Kristi aspired to be part of the entertainment industry, not as an actress, but maybe in PR, maybe in other capacities, she didn't know yet, she was still learning the landscape of Hollywood but she was eager to work hard. Laura & Jim continue their discussion with Andrea Dunlop, host of “Nobody Should Believe Me” who has strong criticisms about the documentary “Take Care of Maya” based on her own background with medical child abuse. Andrea casts doubts about Beate Kowalski’s behavior toward her daughter Maya, she has doubts about the doctors who treated Maya before her admittance to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital…in addition to doubts on Jack Kowalski’s motives for suing the hospital who separated his daughter from her family. Jim and Laura explain what they see as the deep flaws in the investigation into Beate, and the assumptions about the family's behavior. Laura and Jim examine the entire context and highlight the most important aspects of the case in their professional view. We will post on our FB page several sources for our listeners to make up their own minds: (1) the transcript of the interview that Laura mentions that Detective Stephanie Graham conducted with Jack Kowalski about his wife Beate’s behavior and his daughter Maya’s illness; (2) Detective Graham’s deposition in which she admits her suspicion of the Kowalski's was totally based on what she learned from Dr. Sally Smith, the child abuse pediatrician; (3) the court ordered psychological evaluation of Beate Kowalski, which contains crucial written statements by another patient Jessica Stevens (and her mother Sarah Stevens) who was also treated by Dr. Kirkpatrick for CRPS , and who was also put into a medically induced Ketamine coma in the same clinic in Mexico overseen by Dr. Cantu. (He also treated Maya). The Stevens family knew Beate and Maya and have a lot of important observations. Finally, in this episode, Andrea mentions the case of her sister Megan Carter, who was investigated for medical child abuse.
