And they are green sometimes when the rains come, and they are already inhabited. The Doongmabulla Springs in Wangan and Jagalingou country are a sacred place and should be sacred to all of us, but Adrian Burrugubba, who is a senior custodian is taking the Qld Government to the Supreme court on human rights grounds. The Adani company has already overstepped the environmental limits imposed to protect the springs. In a statement I received Mr Burrugubba said "If water extraction and pollution from the Adani mine are allowed to continue, the springs will be destroyed forever. [ermanently breaking our spiritual connection to our ancestors and creation stories." On April 29th we will hear their legal council Alison Rose explain their case. Meanwhile if you care about these people on a front line of climate change, trying to stoip a coal mine, trying to preserve a water source in this dry continent please donate to their legal fund W&J Nagana Yarrbayn Cultural Custodians Legal Defence Fund | Chuffed | Non-profit charity and social enterprise fundraising Also on April 29th you can join the "Rise up like the flood and flames" action organised by Moive beyond Coal Rise Up! 12 Days of Action: 29 April - 10 May - Move Beyond Coal

DON'T LOOK AWAY

4/1/2024
CLIMATE ACTION RADIO SHOWAPRIL 1ST 2024Produced by Vivien Langford D O N ' T L O O K A W A Y.FROM PLUMES OF SMOKE IN THE FOREST, FROM FUGITIVE METHANE NEAR GAS WELLS AND FROM STARVATION IN PALESTINEGuests: Dr Philip Zylstra - Curtin University and UNSW -Expert at nipping bushfires in the bud.https://www.anu.edu.au/news/all-news/prescribed-burning-could-be-making-aussie-forests-more-flammable Piper Rollins Climate Campaigner from Australian Conservation Foundation https://www.acf.org.au/australia-dramatically-underreporting-gas-and-coal-methane-emissions David Rovics with his new album Notes from a Holocaust https://davidrovics.bandcamp.com/album/notes-from-a-holocaust Don't look away from actual Bushfire BehaviourAssociate Professor Philip Zylstra, from Curtin University, said: “If they’re too tall to catch fire, plants calm bushfires by slowing the wind beneath them. If disturbance kills those taller plants, replacements regrow from the ground and add to the fuel. Prescribed burns are a fire mitigation tool used with the aim of reducing fuel load to minimise the intensity and severity of fires. However, while prescribed burns can sometimes decrease flammability in the short term, the way they disrupt forest ecosystems can create longer periods of additional flammability. “Very frequent burning close to homes or control lines could create defendable spaces, but large, remote and infrequent burns maintain the landscape at maximum fire risk because they undermine the natural controls that forests place on fire," Associate Professor Zylstra said. The remote areas that burn have often been extensively logged eg Eden NSW Don't look away from methane : An investigation by ACF and the global non-profit Clean Air Task Force last year detected methane escaping from more than 100 sources at 35 industrial sites in Queensland and NSW. “When it comes to rapidly reducing Australia’s most potent climate heating pollution, cutting methane emissions from the coal and gas industry is low hanging fruit.”Methane emissions are believed to account for about 30% of the global temperature rise since the industrial revolution. Don't look away from PalestineDavid Rovics' new album of songs was composed between October and December 2023He says " I wrote them to bear witness to the genocide of the Palestinian people that continues by the hour as I publish this album."Hear the drones above your headWhat were the last words that she saidBefore she joined the thousands deadAs the bombs rain down

TOXIC RHETORIC . SOCIAL LICENCE and TARKINE OPTIMISM

3/4/2024
CLIMATE ACTION SHOWMARCH 4TH 2024Produced by Vivien LangfordTOXIC RHETORIC . SOCIAL LICENCE and TARKINE OPTIMISM"The future is shaped by those who can see it." Guests:John Grimes - CEO Smart Energy CouncilDr Freya Croft - Blue Futures Lab at Wollongong University - https://www.uow.edu.au/ancors/blue-energy-futures-lab/Dr Colette Harmsen - Bob Brown FoundationTOXIC RHETORIC"Turbines make us sick" was a farm gateway sign ten years ago in regional Victoria. We interviewed Dr Simon Chapman who was turning himself inside out giving evidence to senate inquiries. He was contesting the organised narrative of illness around windfarms and opponents are still organised. Now Coalition MPs and their allies appear at Reckless Renewables rallies. Their hostility, even to wind farms 10kilometres offshore, is building up as renewable Energy Zones are declared. We speak to John Grimes from the Smart Energy Council. SOCIAL LICENCEThen we go to Wollongong University, where Dr Freya Croft is working on how to create social licence for the energy transition that is roilling out too slowly. Plus an historical reminder:In 1903 there were 3623 horsedrawn buses in London and 13 motor busesIn 1913 there were 3522 motor buses and only 142 horse drawn buses"The future is shaped by those who can see it." TARKINE OPTIMISMForest Action is profound Climate Restoration, so we go to Tasmania. Dr Colette Harmsen is a veterinary scientist. In this exclusive interview she speaks to us about how she and Bob Brown were arrested recently and why taking climate action is an antidote to depresssion. As Bob Brown said : "Change doesn’t happen when we are in our comfort zone. It is uncomfortable by nature. If it’s not uncomfortable, then check again – is anything actually changing, or are we just re-arranging the deck chairs? The higher the stakes, the greater the risks that need taking. As leaders, we must take risks. We must find a way to quieten the voice of fear and doubt and back ourselves against the inevitable barrage of resistance."Meanwhile Protesters have gone back to the Styx Valley to peacefully interrupt logging.“While fellow forest defender Ali Alishah is in jail today, we are defending these forests from destruction. The fact that peaceful protesters are being gaoled and face severe penalties for standing up against this destruction will not deter us. It is the native forest logging that is criminal in a climate emergency and extinction crisis,” said Dr Lisa Searle, Campaign Organiser with BBF.“This logging of ancient forests in southern Tasmania is absolutely disgraceful. The government should be ashamed for sanctioning this devastation. We will continue to take action and defend these precious forests until we see a commitment from our leaders to end native forest logging. There is an opportunity right now for Tasmanian voters to make a choice: vote for protecting forests and wildlife or more logging destruction,” she said.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-04/tasmania-expands-native-logging-areas/102552280
