Mörike was fascinated by music, especially by Mozart’s compositions. One of his most influential experiences was the attendance of the opera “Don Giovanni”, which is also a central element of this story. It revolves around Mozart travelling to the premier performance of his work. He takes a rest at Count von Schinzberg’s castle where he plays piano excerpts of the opera for everyone present. Mörike took great care to create an interesting portrait of Mozart informed by historical facts. The purely fictional situations he writes about displays Mozart’s humorous side quite vividly.
