„Unterm Birnbaum“ ist Fontanes einzige Kriminalerzählung, spannend, voller Finten, Fallgruben und Finessen. Der Novelle liegt ein Geschehen zugrunde, das sich im Dorfe Letschin abspielte, in dem Fontane als junger Mann gelebt hat. Großartig erfaßt der Autor die sinistre Atmosphäre des Dörfchens, letztlich geht es ihm auch nicht um die eindringliche Schilderung des Geschehens um den Mord, sondern um die Darstellung des Milieus und der Menschen. Der Birnbaum steht als Zeichen für die Selbsttäuschung des Mörders, er könne die Öffentlichkeit irreführen, wie auch für die Blindheit der Öffentlichkeit selbst. „Unterm Birn-baum“ ist bester Fontane, eine seiner gelungensten, dichtesten Erzählungen.
