EP. 291 Girls Gone Fishin': The Rise of Female Anglers in Competitive Fishing

5/30/2023
In the latest episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer, we got to hear first-hand how high school fishing is helping young girls build confidence, learn valuable skills, and make memories they'll never forget. Here are three key takeaways from the episode: - Fishing helps kids develop essential skills like responsibility and teamwork: Tennessee Bass Nation is the largest high school fishing organization in the US, and kids as young as second grade can get involved. The program teaches them everything they need to know about fishing, and they're responsible for taking care of their equipment and preparing for tournaments. - Success on the water translates to success in life: Hear directly from some local high school fishing young ladies about how fishing helped them develop confidence and strength as young girls. Many girls can load and back the boat better than grown men, proving they can hold their own in a traditionally male-dominated sport. - Fishing can be mentally and physically demanding: One of the young anglers in the episode described waking up as early as 2:30 am to prepare for fishing trips, and some tournament days can last for 14-16 hours or more. But despite the long days and challenging conditions, these girls are proving that they're up to the challenge – and they're having a blast while they do it. 5/23/2023
On this episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer, meet Sara Trampe, co-host of The Sportsman's Journal, with her husband, Tyler. We explore advancements in gear for women in fishing, including clothing and devices such as electric drills and low-profile reels to improve the experience. We also delve into Sara's experience with fishing and how she became a competent female angler now traveling and giving seminars as well as some hands-on instruction for women interested in furthering their fishing skills. Shout out to Crestliner Boats, as they have played a considerable role in their TV show and the fleet at the resort they manage in Northwest Ontario- Cliff Lake Resorts. Whether new to fishing or a seasoned pro, this episode is a must-listen. Enjoy! Timestamped Overview: "The Road to a Fishing Passion": "And then it just kind of progressed from there. It became a passion."— Sara Trampe 00:01:590:03:22 The Growing Popularity of Women Anglers: "When I started fishing with Tyler, we hardly ever saw women at the boat launch...Social media helps with visibility that you can see more women anglers... It's becoming more acceptable that everybody goes and does it. It's not just a gender role thing."— Sara Trampe 00:04:240:04:58 The Impact of Women's Fishing Gear: "For me, it's musky gear, but it's nice to be able to have a rain suit that was designed for women, that fits my body."— Sara Trampe 00:05:210:06:56 Breaking Barriers: "I wanted to have a positive voice for female anglers. I wanted to show that female anglers can be competent and can talk about fishing and know what they're doing and use the right gear and that sort of thing."— Sara Trampe 00:08:460:10:15 Empowering Women in Fishing: "If you don't have a place at the table, you make your own table. And that's what we're doing."— Sara Trampe 00:10:340:11:47 Teaching Fishing to Youth: "I think it's so awesome that schools are creating fishing teams and teaching how to fish and just teaching them some of the skills that they need to be able to do it."— Sara Trampe 00:13:590:14:52 The Benefits of Spending Time Outdoors: "The outdoors is such a wonderful place to be and for mental health and to go out and reset and to teach yourself that as a youth or that possibility, even if you don't realize what it will give you or what it would give back as a kid, because you don't think about those things as a kid. But if you're introduced to that and then you can keep coming back to that as you grow up or keep using that as a reset and then having that lifelong passion, I think that's just huge. That's so amazing."— Sara Trampe 00:16:210:16:51 "Crestliner Boats: I have so much confidence in that boat. I love our boat."— Sara Trampe 00:19:050:21:09 "Fishing Travel Plans: 'Walleye opener up here today... EP. 289 Starting a College Fishing Club That's Inclusive and Educational

5/16/2023
Fishing is more than just a sport. It is a way of connecting with nature, getting some fresh air and exercise, and spending time with friends and family. The impact of fishing extends beyond the personal benefits it provides, and it has far-reaching implications for conservation and the economy. In this podcast episode, Gabriella MaGrath talks about her experience starting a fishing club at USF St. Petersburg. The club has seen increased participation and funding, and they hope to incorporate more volunteer opportunities and hands-on fishing opportunities in the future as Kendall Barker, my other guest this week, takes over as President. St. Petersburg is famous for its variety of fishing, and having a fishing club allows students to learn and participate. The club has made it a point to make their initiative inclusive, welcoming, and education-based. Experienced members teach beginners and learn from one another, making fishing more than just something to do over the weekend. These ladies encourage listeners to start similar initiatives at their schools and colleges to promote fishing as a fun and accessible sport for all. They also emphasize the importance of conservation and maintaining sustainability in the industry. By increasing the participation of college students and young people in fishing, we can secure funding for conservation efforts through the sale of fishing licenses. Listen to the episode to learn more about Fish Donkey App and how it is revolutionizing the fishing industry. You'll also hear about the club's upcoming expansion plans, including more facets such as freshwater fishing. With its recreational and economic benefits, fishing remains a key activity for individuals and communities alike. The fishing club featured in this episode is an excellent example of how a small initiative can attract enthusiasts, promote sustainability, and grow the industry. Timestamped Overview: [00:00:00] Building a foundation for a fishing club takes more work but yields benefits, including funding and membership. Welcome to the Woman Angler and Adventurer podcast. [00:03:44] Clubs organize fishing trips and educational events to assist experienced anglers and newcomers. [00:05:02] Club hosts a virtual summer fishing tournament with prizes from sponsors. The club aims for education, and newcomers may potentially become a competitive team. [00:09:04] A group of students started a fishing club, recruited officers, gained around 50 new members at a recruitment event, and now has 80 members overall. [00:10:31] Kendall joined fishing trips with male officers, promoting males and females alike and helpfulness. [00:12:47] Creating an inclusive and educational fishing club required more work but resulted in a strong foundation, more members, and funding. This approach was chosen because many people in St. Pete come from different areas and need guidance on how to fish in the area. The goal is to welcome and get more people into the angling community. [00:17:44] Club aims to include freshwater fishing and requires members to have appropriate licenses. [00:19:01] Fish handling and conservation practices were taught at the seminar and applied on the water with experienced officers. [00:19:31] New fishing club at USF St. Pete has seen significant interest and funding for college students and plans to incorporate more volunteer opportunities and participate in a high school tournament. Plans include more trips. Mentioned in this Episode: USF St. Petersburg St. Pete Fishing Outfitters Fish Donkey Takemefishing.org Bobby Lane Cup Support Our Partners! 3/14/2023
My journey in Southwest Florida has ended for this season, but only after going out with a bang! On this week's episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast, you will meet a true adventurer through and through. My guest Erica Holla a.k.a. Everglades Erica, has pretty much done it all when it comes to Southwest Florida wildlife, including catching gators and pythons and, more recently, working with birds of prey to keep nuisance birds under control where needed at venues such as landfills, sports arenas, and airports to name a few. After this interview, she was kind enough to come back to the RV Park where we had been staying and bring one of the birds (Larry Bird) to give an educational session to several of the RV'ers and kids, and it was a huge hit! Erica is a true gem, one who lights up a room with her presence, and I can't wait until we get back down to meet up with her again and do some fishing next time! Learn more about your ad choices.
