Did you know that stress and sleep quality affect your bone health? Is there something you can do to determine your risk for Osteoporosis? Doctors usually diagnose Osteoporosis during routine screening for the disease or when the patient has had a fall or fractures. 5/14/2024
How do you uncover the root cause of bone loss? Doctors usually diagnose Osteoporosis during routine screening for the disease. Gardening is an excellent physical activity that people of all ages can enjoy. It isn't just a pastime; it's a sanctuary of growth and vitality. But those with Osteoporosis may worry that pain and the fear of fractures will mean giving up their gardens. If you feel severe pain while gardening, stop and consult your doctor. However, Osteoporosis should not prevent you from enjoying some form of gardening. A significant benefit of gardening is that it's like having a workout in a pleasant and healthy environment. As you cultivate your garden, your body engages in weight-bearing and resistance activities that contribute to better health as long as you move safely. Having Osteoporosis does not mean giving up the things you love doing. Enjoy your garden and smell the flowers! In this episode, I demonstrate seven things you must avoid when gardening with Osteoporosis and what you should do instead. Thank you for listening to another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast! “Be aware of your posture when you're in the garden and enjoy the garden. It's so wonderful—you're getting Vitamin D, you're out in the sun, it's relaxing, you're connected to nature, and you're planting. What could be better? And when you avoid these positions and use posture and body mechanics, you can do this safely. So it's a win-win situation.” - Margie Bissinger In this episode: - [00:45] - What's the problem with gardening with a rounded back? - [05:05] - What must you do instead of bending from the waist? - [06:23] - Why should you avoid bending and twisting? - [10:18] - How to prevent injury when working while standing - [12:31] - Why being in one place for an extended period is not ideal - [13:47] - Stop doing everything yourself without tools - [15:07] - Why going into the garden first thing in the morning is not suitable for people with Osteoporosis - [16:24] - Slide presentation of the things to avoid when gardening - [20:24] - Here's a demonstration of the things I discussed Resources mentioned - Myers Detox Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/myers-detox-podcast/id1021418457 - Exercise and Osteoporosis Handout - https://www.happyboneshappylife.com/osteoporosis-exercises-to-strengthen-your-bones-and-prevent-fractures - Discounted supplements through Fullscript - https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/mbissinger More about Margie - Website - https://margiebissinger.com/ - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/p/Margie-Bissinger-MS-PT-CHC-100063542905332/ - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/margiebissinger/?hl=en DISCLAIMER – The information presented on this podcast should not be construed as medical advice. Why Mental Health Matters If You Have Osteoporosis With Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND

4/30/2024
Many people take good care of their bodies but don't pay much attention to their mental health. Often, they associate stress and anxiety as a natural part of life. But the effect of mental stress, such as eating disorders, smoking, or physical inactivity, also threatens a person's physical well-being. In this episode, Dr. Christina Bjorndal and I discuss the link between mental and physical health and how you can experience complete healing from the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Dr. Chris is a licensed naturopathic doctor and established keynote speaker on regaining your mental health using a naturopathic approach. She is one of the only licensed NDs in Canada who is considered an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, ADD/ADHD, OCD, and schizoaffective disorders. For years, Dr. Chris endured debilitating depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety and battled bulimia, addiction, and a range of other mental health challenges. Finally, feeling terrorized by her thoughts, she attempted to take her life. This devastating low point led to a profound reckoning. She began to take back control of her life. Today, she owns a thriving naturopathic clinic, living her life’s purpose and passion in the most authentic way. Her latest book, “Beyond the Label,” will give you the courage, support, confidence, and guidance you need to take the steps toward mental wellness. Thank you for listening to another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast! “What people don't realize is that when you are depressed, or you're not feeling great, the last thing that you're doing is caring for your body, let alone your bones.” - Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND In this episode: - [02:23] - Why Dr. Chris is passionate about her work - [06:59] - Mental health and bone health connection - [09:07] - What is the ideal mental health? - [12:07] - Four steps to better mental and physical health - [23:04] - Overcoming mental health issues - [25:19] - How to deal with fear - [29:38] - The impact of forgiveness on a person's well-being - [30:38] - The relationship between hormones and mental health - [35:08] - Ways to recharge and work with Dr. Chris Resources mentioned - Forgiveness Practice - https://christina-bjorndal.mykajabi.com/a-step-in-forgiveness-lead-magnet - Mind, Body, Soul retreat - https://christina-bjorndal.mykajabi.com/retreat - Eating Guidelines for Balanced Mental Health - https://christina-bjorndal.mykajabi.com/eating-guidelines - Dr. Christina's Books - https://christina-bjorndal.mykajabi.com/books - Discounted supplements through Fullscript - https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/mbissinger - Happy Bones Club - https://www.happyboneshappylife.com/bones-club More about Margie - Website - https://margiebissinger.com/ - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/p/Margie-Bissinger-MS-PT-CHC-100063542905332/ - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/margiebissinger/?hl=en DISCLAIMER – The information presented on this podcast should not be construed as medical advice. How to Increase Bone Density Through the Onero™ Osteoporosis Exercise Program With Dr. Belinda Beck

4/23/2024
Just because you have Osteoporosis doesn’t mean you can no longer lead an active lifestyle or you have to stay indoors to minimize the risk of falls and fractures. Certain kinds of high-intensity loading can be safe and effective even for people with low bone mass if supervised under the right conditions. And that's what Dr. Belinda Beck and I are discussing today. Dr. Belinda Beck, a powerhouse in the field of bone health, holds a BMHS(Ed), MS, PhD, and FACSM and is a professor in the School of Health Sciences & Social Work at Griffith University. She developed Onero™, an evidence-based exercise program based on the LIFTMOR study conducted at Griffith University. With over 20 years of teaching musculoskeletal anatomy and conducting bone research, her expertise has garnered national and international recognition. Dr. Beck serves on the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee of Healthy Bones Australia (formerly Osteoporosis Australia) and the Healthy Bones Australia National Consumer Advisory Committee. Discover how Onero™ can improve your quality of life in today's informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast! “A number on the DEXA scan doesn't even matter to me as long as the quality of life is improving. That's what I care about as a human, not as a researcher. As a postmenopausal person, I'm at risk like everybody else. So I care what my quality of life is like.” - Dr. Belinda Beck In this episode: - [04:17] - What is Onero™? - [08:33] - Delivering Onero™ to people who need it - [14:47] - Reduction in fractures and falls with the use of Onero™ - [20:52] - Transforming couch potatoes into strong and active women - [23:28] - Who can or can't do Onero™? - [28:36] - Learn what makes the program safe and how you can become an accredited Onero™ coach - [33:14] - How to find a certified Onero™ coach in your area - [36:09] - Onero™ training program for providers Resources mentioned - The Bone Clinic Website - https://theboneclinic.com.au/ - Become an Onero™ Academy Accredited Practitioner - https://onero.academy/ - Discounted supplements through Fullscript - https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/mbissinger - Website for Dr. Claudia Tamas' Onero™ program in NJ - https://www.nmrnj.com/ More about Margie - Website - https://margiebissinger.com/ - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/p/Margie-Bissinger-MS-PT-CHC-100063542905332/ - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/margiebissinger/?hl=en DISCLAIMER – The information presented on this podcast should not be construed as medical advice.
