2/5/24 Embracing Shame

2/5/2024
Shame is a universal social emotion meant to keep us out of trouble. It may be expressed in many ways including perfectionism or feeling worthless. It can be hard to detect shame since it can bind with other emotions, such as grief, anger, or fear. Shame can be transformed from a self-punishing emotion into an ally, supporting our well being and health. Nurse Rona will be joined by Bret Lyon, PhD, and Sheila Rubin, MA, LMFT, authors of Embracing Shame. The post 2/5/24 Embracing Shame appeared first on KPFA.

12/18/23 Taking Care of Our Hearts

12/18/2023
This week, we talk with a luminary cardiologist about the heart in two senses. First, we discuss how to take care of our hearts in the physical sense: What to do to keep our hearts healthy and beating for a long time to come. But, we all know there’s another, more metaphorical and perhaps even spiritual way of talking about our heart. It’s the organ to which we often attribute love, care, sadness, and many of our deepest feelings. So, we have a wide-ranging conversation, asking our guest what drew her to the field in the first place, how she approaches taking care of patients, and what deeper lessons she’s drawn from her work. Host David B. Feldman interviews Dr. Anu Lala, cardiologist and associate professor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. The post 12/18/23 Taking Care of Our Hearts appeared first on KPFA.

11/13/23 How to Have More Energy

11/13/2023
A 2017 survey by the National Safety Council found that 76 percent of Americans feel tired at work. And, 4 to 5 percent of drivers per month report falling asleep or nodding off behind the wheel. That’s alarming given that it is estimated that drowsy driving is responsible for 91,000 crashes per year. So, what can we do about it? As our guest tells us this episode, some surprisingly simple solutions can help us not only get more sleep but also gain more energy during the day. And, it starts with knowing our “chronotype,” the natural inclination of our bodies to sleep at certain times and be awake at others. Host David B. Feldman interviews Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist, clinical sleep specialist, and author of several book, including Energize! Go from Dragging It to Kicking It in 30 Days. 10/30/23 Being Mature in Relationships

10/30/2023
Ask yourself: What are the ingredients of a strong relationship? Our guest today argues that they include paying attention to each other, accepting one another’s quirks, showing appreciation, being affectionate, and giving each other the space you need to flourish. On some level, this may sound obvious—or even simple—but we all know it’s far from easy. So, how do we actually do all this? How do we show up in our relationships in mature and balanced ways, deepen our connections, and make sure that our relationships are as strong and meaningful as possible? These are just some of the questions we explore in this episode. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Dr. David Richo, psychotherapist and author of more than 25 books, including How to be an Adult in Relationships: The Five Keys to Mindful Loving. So, in this episode, we’ll talk all about OCD—what it is, what it’s like to live with the condition, and techniques people can use to treat it. Host David B.
