12/7/2023
Instead of talking about an article today from www.naturallysavvy.com, Lisa decided to post an interview she did with Dr. Cass Ingram from 2019 on natural remedies for cold and flu. Dr. Ingram passed away in 2022. Dr. Cass's obituary It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Cass Ingram (Cassim Igram) on Saturday, March 12, 2022, in his Illinois home. He was 66 years old. A prolific author, researcher, lecturer, and popular media personality, Dr. Cass will be remembered for his passionate endorsement of wild medicinal herbs and spices and his belief in the healing power of wild harvested whole foods. His most lauded professional accomplishment was his extensive research and writing on the curative properties of oil of wild oregano, which earned him the moniker “Dr. Oregano” among patients, associates, and his legion of fans. Dr. Cass graduated from the Des Moines School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1984, finishing at the top of his class in osteopathic manipulation and holistic medicine. He studied under several of the top osteopathic physicians of the day before beginning an apprenticeship with Dr. Maur, founder of the renowned Maur Preventive Medical Center in Zion, Illinois. Dr. Maur took young Dr. Cass under his wing and taught him how to start and run a thriving preventive care medical center. In 1985, Dr. Cass started his first clinic in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. In 1986 he then opened the Arlington Preventive Medical Center in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Thousands of patients from all over the Midwest poured into the clinic. About this time, he started developing formulas for his own line of vitamins. From that point on, Dr. Cass worked tirelessly to provide natural products and knowledge of those products to the world through his books, lectures and many hundreds of media appearances. He leaves to us a vast library of knowledge in book and video format that informs us how to safely use wild edible plants from the earth to live a joyous, healthy life.Dr. Cass’s life's work will be cherished and he will be dearly missed by his three children; Surriah, Maryam and Ali Igram, as well as by his seven grandchildren; Jameela, Ayesha, Ibrahim, Muhammad, Yusuf, Maryam, and Maya, and by his five siblings; Hassan, Jamiely, Suehila, Abdullah, and Surria. EP #1248: Psychophysiologic Disorder (PPD) - The Trauma and Chronic Pain Connection with Dr. David Clarke

11/21/2023
Most people assume that pain and illness are the straightforward result of injury and disease. However, one in six adults suffers from chronic pain or illness that is either “medically unexplained” or unresponsive to virtually any treatment. These patients often live with a psychophysiologic disorder (PPD), the increasingly common clinical term for very real stress-related and brain-generated medical conditions. Such chronic symptoms manifest themselves as everything from fibromyalgia to irritable bowel syndrome, and their incompatibility with conventional diagnosis leaves most PPD patients feeling neglected by the medical profession and hopeless about their future. Lisa is joined by Dr. David Clarke, the President of the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association (PPDA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to ending the chronic pain epidemic. Dr. Clarke graduated from Williams College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and he holds an MD from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. His organization’s mission is to advance the awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of stress-related and brain-generated medical conditions. The PPDA supports an evidence-based, biopsychosocial approach that is safer, more affordable, and more effective than traditional treatments of chronic pain. With a focus on uncovering stress and identifying trauma, the PPDA encourages patients to take control of their symptoms without drugs, surgery, or expensive treatments. Dr. Clarke is the organization’s president, a renowned gastroenterologist, author of three books, producer of three films, and an international lecturer on psychophysiologic disorders. Learn more at EndChronicPain.org. The Psychophysiologic Disorders Association (PPDA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to ending the chronic pain epidemic by promoting awareness of PPD diagnosis and treatment. Educating medical professionals is the first step in creating a healthcare system that is more compassionate toward PPD and more capable of serving every patient. In 2021, opioids accounted for over 80,000 of the drug overdose deaths reported in the United States. The opioid crisis is a plague on modern health care, and much of its strength originates from those patients unable to find understanding and relief — like those suffering from brain-generated symptoms. SummaryDr. David Clarke discusses psycho-physiologic disorders, a condition where symptoms are generated by the brain and not explained by disease or injury. He shares personal experiences and explains how stress and trauma can impact the body. Dr. Clarke emphasizes the importance of diagnosing and treating the underlying stressors to alleviate symptoms. He highlights the success of pain relief psychotherapy and the role of self-treatment techniques. Resources such as the Curable app and books are recommended for further support. Dr. Clarke's work offers hope and solutions for individuals with chronic unexplained symptoms. EP #1243: Gender Differences in Strength Training with Lee Boyce

11/14/2023
Lisa is joined by Lee Boyce who talks about gender difference and strength training. In Lee's own words: I’ve done a lot of stuff in my career as a fitness professional. But I still use the same job description whenever I’m asked. I’m a trainer. I help people work out for results. And possessing that skill is what’s enabled me to land the opportunities I’ve achieved to this point.I don’t use fancy terms like “body transformation specialist” or “muscle mechanic”. I got to where I’m at by sticking to the basic tenets of my craft – and for me, that means never abandoning my number 1 pursuit: Fitness training and coaching clients. That’s the piece of the pie that puts a combination of my own fitness background, my school-based knowledge, and my time spent competing in varsity track, to good practice on a regular basis. And keeping my allegiance there has directly or indirectly paid dividends in the form of being able to educate other professionals, land some pretty high-profile clients, teach college students, and achieve all the accomplishments you’ll see littered throughout this website. I won’t repeat them all here.Instead, I’ll use this section to give you the lowdown on what to expect hanging around this place. REAL TRAINING. NO NONSENSE. Just like the slogan of this website implies, you won’t have to filter through fluff or off-topic material to get to the goods. This site is dedicated to delivering training information and advice for a large demographic of people. There’s strength training, fat loss, muscle development, and conditioning advice that ranges from beginner level content to advanced content for experienced trainees. You’ll find most of this variety by keeping abreast with the work I have published in different print magazines (I’m usually on newsstands for something every month) and digital publications. In addition to this, my “training tips” section will highlight nuggets of fitness advice (or good exercises to try) for your convenience. As a whole, it’s a lot of content – I know – but the site makes it fairly easy to navigate through and also keyword search just what you might be looking for. I use my blog section a bit differently than most fitness professionals. I don’t post too often, but when I do, you can count on a more editorial piece that highlights things I see in the fitness industry, and how they can affect the culture of fitness as a whole. Some of the subjects I choose to zero in on may open your eyes to a different perspective through a counter-intuitive lens.
