At craft shows and corporate headquarters across the United States, you might see works by the artist B.J. Adams. She makes extremely detailed wall coverings that often show flowers, trees, and hands made from thread. Her work “Variations on H” is made up of different colors of finely made hands connected together to form a flowing cloth. How did Ms. Adams make this work? Today we answer this question as we explore the world of textile art. (MUSIC) DOUG JOHNSON: For thousands of years, people have developed creative ways to produce textiles. A textile is a piece of cloth that has been formed by weaving, knitting, pressing or knotting together individual pieces of fiber. Yarn is a general term for long pieces of interlocked fibers. Yarn can be made from natural materials such as cotton, linen, silk and wool. Or it can be made from manufactured materials such as nylon, acrylic and polyester. A Dutch doctor - it’s important to communicate in English. Interviewer : When did you begin learning English? Doctor: I studied medicine in the Netherlands for eight and a half years and I started learning English in middle school with German and French. In my work I travel all over the world - well, now I’m in China only for a few weeks but I have travelled with the Red Cross to most countries in the world. Interviewer : What is the Dutch approach to teaching English in medical school? Doctor: When I was at university all of our teaching was in Dutch but all the textbooks were in English. At that time, there was a movement going on in Holland to make all the teaching in English. I followed this movement very strongly because in my profession it’s important to communicate in English. Today we present about the history of the English Language. The English language was strongly influenced by an event that took place one thousand four hundred years ago. In the year 597, the Roman Catholic Church began its attempt to make Christianity the religion of Britain. The language of the Catholic Church was Latin. Latin was not spoken as a language in any country at that time. But it was still used by some people. Latin made it possible for a church member from Rome to speak to a church member from Britain. Program Helps Students Express Themselves With Creative Writing This is the VOA Special English Education Report. 826 is the name of a nonprofit organization that works to help students become better writers by thinking creatively. 826 is also the address of the first center where this literary arts program began in two thousand two. Author Dave Eggars and educator Ninive Calegari started the program in California at 826 Valencia Street in San Francisco. It now serves thirty thousand students through writing and tutoring centers in eight American cities. Eight twenty-six Valencia Street is a fun place for students and visitors. At the front is a pirate supply store. Think of the kind of place where Captain Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean" might shop. Leigh Lehman is the executive director. She says the idea of entering through a pirate store is meant to get students not to think of the place as an education center. ..., ... Today, we tell about Louis Kahn. He is considered one of the most important American building designers of the twentieth century. (MUSIC) STEVE EMBER: Louis Kahn helped define modern architecture. Architecture is the art and science of designing and building structures such as houses, museums, and office buildings. Kahn’s architecture has several defining qualities. For example, Kahn was very interested in the look and feel of the materials he used. He used brick and concrete in new and special ways. Kahn also paid careful attention to the use of sunlight. He liked natural light to enter his buildings through interesting kinds of windows and openings. Kahn’s work can also be identified by his creative use of geometric shapes.
