Ep. 070 - Alcohol and the Brain

2/11/2019
As attorneys one of the most important things we can do for our clients is provide them with sufficient and accurate information for them to make an informed decision. On the next episode of Attorney Heart, I provide you with important information related to how alcohol impacts our health, with a specific focus on how it impacts our brain. In our fast-paced, high-stress, always-going, don’t-stop lifestyle, it can be easy for us to rely on a few drinks a week (or a day) to take the edge off. But how does alcohol impact our brain’s cognitive abilities? How does it impact our focus and attention? Does it affect our memory and does alcohol really shrink our brain? Do we lose any healthy nutrients when we drink or is it just toxins that enter our body? Does our brain fully recover by the next day? While it may not provide all of the answers in relation to alcohol and our health, I hope you find this next episode helpful and that it allows you to make an informed decision about the relationship you may currently have with alcohol. Wishing you awesome health and wellness! ----------------------------------------------------------------- New Attorney Heart interviews will be posted on iMATER NOW’s YouTube channel. Ep. 69 - The Problem-Solver Within

2/4/2019
As attorneys, law-students, and advocates we are trained to solve problems. We are trained to spot problems and then do whatever we have to in order to resolve that problem for our clients. As a result, if we were not before, we become problem-solvers. More importantly, we become very closely connected to the identity of being a problem-solver. As a long-time problem-solver myself, I realized that over-identifying with this professional quality often did not leave room for me to experience problems myself. On the next episode of Attorney Heart I delve into how the problem-solver within us will often limit us from asking for support/help in various different scenarios and how this in turn can impact our well-being. The problem-solver within us sometimes makes us deny the fact that we have problems (and need support) because we solve others’ problems and as a result we should not have them ourselves. If we do ask for help, the belief goes, our reputation will be impacted, we will be stigmatized, and it is just better to suffer in silence. I hope this episode provides you with a different perspective on how you can turn this belief or mindset around to permit you to live a more professionally and personally fulfilling life. ----------------------------------------------------------------- New Attorney Heart interviews will be posted on iMATER NOW’s YouTube channel. Ep. 068 - Leaving Law Behind

1/28/2019
On the next awesome episode of Attorney Heart, Casey Berman shares his story of why he decided to leave law behind. Casey Berman graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1999 and after a few years in the legal field he stopped practicing to create a number of different enterprises, but in particular he created his business called Leave Law Behind. Leave Law Behind helps attorneys leave the law and on this episode Casey provides the insights, tips, and ideas that he provides other attorneys who seek to find alternative careers. Casey strongly believes that one of the most common reasons that attorneys leave the law is because their personal qualities do not adequately align with their professional profile. Casey has developed various important tools to help attorneys, but in particular his “strengths finder” test has been very popular in the legal community. We get into an awesome conversation on managing fear and how this is one of the biggest blocks to making a desired change that will improve your life. Casey holds a BA in Rhetoric from the University of California at Berkeley and a JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Ep. 066 - Cave Meditation

1/14/2019
Welcome to Attorney Heart, the podcast focused on bringing awareness to and promoting attorney and professional well-being! After a 6 week trip to India in late 2018 I was fortunate to be able to deepen my relationship to meditation. As a young attorney I never meditated. And by never I mean never. I personally did not understand what I gained from it. Closing my eyes, sitting still, breathing deeply, what did that do for me? Years later, as I became a more experienced attorney and the stressors and pressures of the profession increased, I wanted to improve my ability to manage stress. At first I was not consistent when it came to meditating, but now I meditate for at least 10 minutes a day. On the next Episode of Attorney Heart I take you through a guided meditation of an experience that I had while I was in Rishikesh, India. If you have never meditated before, I recommend you stay committed to doing this meditation for 21-30 days. The meditation last only about 8-10 minutes per day and it can be incredibly helpful in reducing stress, managing anxiety, increasing focused, strengthening your immune system, and improving sleeping patterns. Also, the wonderful thing about meditating is that you can do it anywhere, at anytime. Enjoy, and thank you for tuning in to another episode of Attorney Heart! --

Ep. 062: Putting Your Wellness First

12/17/2018
Welcome to Attorney Heart, the podcast focused on bringing awareness to and promoting attorney well-being! As attorneys, we focus a lot on advocating for others, which is one of our main roles. However, one of the things that happens when we do this continuously is that we often tend to forget to advocate for ourselves. It is important to learn how to put yourself first because if you don't, then it is going to limit your ability to help & advocate for others. Putting yourself first doesn't mean you're being selfish. Your overall holistic being needs to be in tip top shape. You need to learn how to fulfill your own needs first. Doing that will not prevent or detract from you advocating effectively for others. Over time it's going to enable you help them in a much more positive and effective way, by being your best & most authentic version of yourself. A lot of times we tend to consume our time & energy in ways that impress others by taking more & more responsibility. Over time, we end up taking more than we can handle, and this becomes so overwhelming that it impacts our health directly. Putting yourself first is a gradual process and has a lot of benefits: You're going to gain more energy, and you will be more productive, more effective, more efficient, happier, get more respect from others & respect others more, have better relationships, reduce your fears, reduce stress, reduce anxiety, reduce any resentment, and reduce any depression you may have. Learning how to take care of ourselves sets a good example for our children. And it can go a long way in terms of what they see and what kind of values they end up adopting. -- New Attorney Heart interviews will be posted on iMATER NOW’s YouTube channel. Ep 060: Connecting Mind and Heart

12/4/2018
Welcome to Attorney Heart, the podcast focused on bringing awareness to and promoting attorney well-being! The British writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley once said “There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self.” What Huxley was talking about was really learning how to deepen the relationship between the mind and your heart. Between your thoughts and your emotions. A lot of the times we do not pay attention to that relationship between the mind and the heart, and we think they are not really connected, or that they are independent of each other. We think if I focus on my logical thoughts and if I focus on my reason, I’ll be fine and I can move forward. But I have to tell you... that’s not true. You really have to be able to focus on all of yourself to really thrive. For me personally, I can say that by deepening the relationship between my heart and my mind, and by staying present with every single thought, emotion and experience, I’ve really learned to live and to thrive, not just professionally but in life. That’s how I’ve really learned to excel in the work that I do. And I know if you take steps to do the same, you will have the same experience. For years, I didn’t nurture all of my areas of well being. And that hurt me. You have 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts a day. And a lot of those thoughts create emotions within you that you don’t really pay attention to. Most of the time you’re not aware of what emotions are coming up for you. But the issue becomes: what happens when you are stuck on a particular thought which are creating emotions which are making it difficult for you to get through your day? Maybe you are thinking about a particular big brief you have to do. And maybe you are not getting started on this big brief because it is the first time you have worked on this particular type of big brief. And maybe the thought of drafting this big brief you have never drafted before just ends affecting you in a way that creates a little bit of fear or self doubt. You may end up procrastinating because once we encounter a particular emotion connected to fear and self-doubt and overwhelm, it becomes really difficult to move towards that goal. So if we don’t catch the thought early on enough, we hurt ourselves. And related to that, when you catch that thought and you become self aware of the particular thought you are having in relation to the task you have at hand, you need to work really hard at not guilty or shaming yourself. Because that will only hurt you. -- New Attorney Heart interviews will be posted on iMATER NOW’s YouTube channel. Attorney Heart is brought to you by iMATER NOW. 11/19/2018
Welcome to Attorney Heart, the podcast focused on bringing awareness to and promoting attorney well-being! On the next episode of Attorney Heart, I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) Director Kevin Kish. Director Kish shares his journey in becoming the leader of the largest civil rights agency in the United States. We discuss the role of the DFEH and cover various important civil rights topics focused on how he aims to advance DFEH’s mission of protecting the people of the state of California from unlawful discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations as well as from hate violence and human trafficking. I really enjoyed our discussion around how stress shows up in different forms, especially when you make a high level transition that moves you away from full-time litigation to a management position. Anyone considering making a similar transition should definitely tune in, a lot of valuable tips. If you want to learn more about how to join the DFEH, Director Kish also covers some pointers as you move forward with that application process and gives insight on the applicants that the DFEH is looking for. Enjoy and please share with anyone who may be interested in pursuing a civil rights career with the DFEH! 11/5/2018
Welcome to Attorney Heart, the podcast focused on bringing awareness to and promoting attorney well-being! In a world where it’s easier to go with the flow and settle with whatever life deals us, it’s always so inspiring to meet people who dared to challenge the status quo and stood up for whatever their hearts desire, no matter the struggle. Today, we will be listening to a remarkable lady prosecutor who, despite life’s setbacks and blatant NOs, refused to buckle and faced life head-on. Let’s be inspired by her story from starting out as an expectant law student with no fund for law school to taking the bar and eventually becoming a district attorney. Let’s reminisce together as she recounts her journey to living the life of her dreams, be awed by the tough spirit that refused to let life’s tragedies bring her down and learn a thing or two about choosing priorities, maintaining work-life balance and learning to step aside for a while and recharge. Let’s all welcome Siannah Collado Boutte, a District Attorney who recently joined The Simon Law Group and an adjunct professor at Southwestern Law School where she teaches Criminal Law In Action during the winter and summer sessions. Prior to that, during her term as a DA, she also taught Project Lead for 7 years, a program targeted to teach inner city 5th graders about the criminal justice system.
