Genesis Revisited: Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Steve Hackett Look Back and Ahead

1/22/2025
For this Rewind episode of Kyle Meredith with..., revisit conversations with Genesis alumni Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Steve Hackett. From Rutherford's Mike and the Mechanics project to Banks' orchestral ambitions and Hackett's prog pilgrimages, these discussions dive into a sonic odyssey of reinvention, nostalgia, and reunion chatter. Turns out, “I wouldn’t rule it out” was prog-rock code for “See you in 2020!” Still, there’s plenty to unpack — like Rutherford's cheerful reflections on Let Me Fly, Banks finding inspiration in Renaissance painters, and Hackett globe-trotting with a sitar under one arm and a message of musical unity in the other. Rewind: Ann and Nancy Wilson on Solo Projects, Band Dynamics, and the Future of Heart

1/15/2025
What’s better than one Wilson sister blazing her own path? Two Wilson sisters redefining the rock ‘n’ roll family drama. Ann Wilson dishes on her introspective solo album, a killer band lineup, and why Heart was on a bit of a hiatus (distance makes the riffs grow fonder?). Meanwhile, Nancy Wilson reflects on Roadcase Royale, her honeymoon phase with a new band, and what it’s like to downshift from legendary arena rock to pizza on the tour bus. No new Heart album? Don’t worry; these sisters have enough projects to make Fleetwood Mac look lazy. Listen to Ann and Nancy Wilson chat about all this and more. Rewind: Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson of The B-52s on Solo Projects, Anniversaries, and the Perpetual Party

1/13/2025
What happens when two legends of camp and cosmic rock step out from the mothership? Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson talk with Kyle Meredith about life outside The B-52s—because after nearly 50 years of party-starting, who wouldn’t need some “me” time? Cindy waxes poetic about her “not-so-solo” solo project, armed with art installations and something she calls “turbo chill.” Meanwhile, Kate revisits the band’s formative years, shouts out Georgia’s music scene (despite its initial indifference to their lobster-themed antics), and reveals why there may never be another B-52s album. Spoiler: it’s hard to jam when everyone’s busy writing songs with Sia or about walls. Nostalgia, chaos, and a dash of the absurd—just like the band itself. Rewind: Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs on Solo Albums, Reunions, and Led Zeppelin

1/8/2025
Is there a more quintessentially ‘90s band than Pavement? The lo-fi legends practically invented the sound of slacker indie rock, blending sharp wit with just the right amount of musical chaos. On this Rewind episode of Kyle Meredith with..., frontman Stephen Malkmus and guitarist Scott Kannberg/Spiral Stairs reflect on the band's legacy and ultimate reunion. From Slanted and Enchanted to Wowee Zowee, Pavement became indie darlings and reluctant icons of a generation that pretended not to care. Rewind: Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood on His Photography, Nick Cave, and Radiohead’s Reunion

12/27/2024
On this Rewind episode, Kyle Meredith speaks with Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood who opens up about his new photography book, How To Disappear: A Photographic Portrait of Radiohead, which captures the band’s journey from 2003’s Hail to the Thief to 2016’s A Moon Shaped Pool. The book offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at Radiohead, a band known for its mystique, and includes personal photos interspersed with words of reflection on the band’s middle years—years when they were neither in their initial rocket to fame nor at a point of nostalgia. Greenwood credits Nick Cave for helping him frame the concept of the book, finding beauty in the “middle years” of a band’s career, when they’re just getting on with business, far from the sensationalism of early success or later decline. The bassist jokes about the band’s reluctance to be photographed but reflects on how supportive his bandmates were of his passion for photography. The book’s influences include famed photographers like Gary Winogrand and Robert Frank, and Greenwood talks about how he tried to emulate their documentary style in his own work, capturing the candid moments of band life. The interview delves into the band’s creative process, particularly how the environments they recorded in influenced their sound, from haunted 15th-century manor houses during OK Computer to derelict country estates for In Rainbows. Greenwood recounts how the physical spaces became part of the album’s DNA, lending atmosphere and reverb to their iconic sound. Greenwood also reflects on his bass-playing origins, his love for classic soul music, and the powerful influence of American culture on the band’s music. He mentions his recent work with Nick Cave, playing bass on Cave’s new album, and how the band’s hiatus allowed him to explore other creative avenues. As Radiohead approaches its 40th anniversary, Greenwood hints that the band recently reunited for a jam session and is excited about what’s next, though he’s careful not to reveal too much about their future plans. Rewind: Maynard James Keenan & Les Claypool on Thwarting Criminals, Performing in Costume, and Drinking Wine

12/25/2024
For this Rewind of our 1000th episode of Kyle Meredith With…, Kyle sits down with two icons of rock—Primus lead man Les Claypool and Tool’s Maynard James Keenan—to talk about their ongoing collaboration and friendship, highlighted by the upcoming “Sessanta Tour.” The conversation quickly turns hilarious, with the two bantering about everything from thwarting bank robberies and wrestling bears to recalling their first meeting during the 1993 Lollapalooza. They discuss the challenges of blending their distinctive styles while playing on each other’s songs during their live shows, and adding a fishing pond behind the stage for Les during downtime. Les also teases the idea of finally finishing his long-awaited projects with Sean Lennon and Billy Strings, giving fans some hope for more boundary-pushing collaborations. In classic Claypool and Keenan fashion, the duo keeps things unpredictable, talking candidly about the creative process, their love of stepping into character, and their dynamic stage presence. Les likens his approach to performing to Halloween—a celebration that allows him to become different personas while entertaining the audience. Maynard, for his part, opens up about his initial insecurities that led him to take on different characters during his performances, noting that doing so still serves as a buffer between himself and the audience, allowing him to focus on entertaining rather than baring all. The conversation also takes a fun detour as Les recounts a surreal acoustic jam session he had with Eric Idle, Weird Al Yankovic, and Puddles the Clown, revealing the kind of unexpected encounters that add magic to his life. The two also recount a story about an amplifier failure at Red Rocks that became an unforgettable moment for the band and audience alike. Rewind: Best of 2024: Dave Navarro

As 2024 comes to a close, Kyle Meredith with... is taking a look the best interviews from the last 12 months. In this Rewind episode, listen back to the chat with Dave Navarro where he talks about this year's Jane’s Addiction reunion. He also touches on how big of an influence Daniel Ash was for him, as well as the process of recording the new songs “Imminent Redemption” and “True Love” and why they’re only playing songs from their first three albums (“Chris Chaney is playing with AC/DC, poor guy”). Navarro goes on to talk about his distaste for seeing fans holding up phones during concerts, taking a break from guitar after Taylor Hawkins’ death, and why never wrote a second solo record. He then details getting to be more experimental with his playing as of late, The Velvet Underground’s influence on the band, and the distractions that kept Jane's Addiction unfocused for the past 20 years. Rewind: Best of 2024: Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard

12/18/2024
As 2024 wraps up, Kyle Meredith with... is taking a look at some of the best interviews from the past year. In this Rewind, Kyle revisits an interview with Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard to talk about the band’s latest album, Dark Matter. The guitarist gives us the inside on the joy and abandonment while making the LP with producer Andrew Watt, how it came together so much quicker than Gigaton, and working in a way they did in the early days of the group. On the guitar side, Gossard tells us how he finds space in a song with the addition of Watt and Josh Klinghoffer in the mix, why we never see him playing back-to-back on stage with Mike McCready, and how his focus is completely different than the lead guitarist. Interestingly, Stone also reveals that The Cure were a very big influence on the album, as well as U2. In fact, with U2 in mind, Gossard tells us why he doesn’t want Pearl Jam to play The Sphere, and then gives his thoughts on The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins deconstruction of “Dark Matter,” and, maybe most excitingly, says that he’d love to PJ to start on a follow up with Watt right away.
