Your Enemy's Victory Speech

2/20/2024
William Ury, author of Possible: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict has worked on peace negotiations in Norther Ireland, South Africa, and Colombia joins us to share some lessons and tactics. One is to imagine your loathed rival delivering a speech to their public. What would he say. If it's Kim Jong Un, would he shout-out Dennis Rodman? Plus, Nikki Haley takes the low road, too. And Donald Trump pays the piper, but the piper only requires 5% down. BEST OF THE GIST: Tunnel Edition

2/17/2024
In this installment of Best Of The Gist, we listen back to Mike’s December 6, 2023 interview with Aric Toler about the storied Hamas tunnel network, which, depending on where you get your news, is either a "vast labyrinth" or a 160-yard tunnel with little room for a command center capable of orchestrating the October 7th attack. Aric Toler is a reporter on the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times, where he combines traditional reporting techniques with "open-source" reporting practices, and he recently contributed to a Times investigation about the tunnels. Then we rewind to this past Tuesday so Mike can again ask the question, “Would a ‘Winter Wonderland’ occur to any songwriter today?” Produced by Joel Patterson and Corey Wara Email us at thegist@mikepesca.com To advertise on the show: https://advertisecast.com/TheGist Subscribe to our ad-free and/or PescaPlus versions of The Gist: https://subscribe.mikepesca.com/ Follow Mike’s Substack: Pesca Profundities | Mike Pesca | Substack Learn more about your ad choices. Identifying Non-Identity-Based Solutions

2/9/2024
We end DEI week with the second half of our interview with Denise Hamilton, author of Indivisible: How to Forge our Differences into a Stronger Future. We discuss areas where racism might very well be at play, though focusing on identity isn't necessarily the best way forward. And our President is a well-meaning elderly gentleman, qualities that are apparently much more of an electoral vulnerability than being a vindictive old man who forever holds a grudge. Does DEI Work?

2/5/2024
All week, we'll be taking a deep dive into DEI—Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—which has come under attack from conservatives. A great defense would be to point to the many demonstrable successes of DEI, but that's not always easy, because many of the highest profile expressions of DEI haven't yielded quantifiable successes. To kickoff DEI Week, we're joined today by Northwestern School of Education's Ahmmad Brown, a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) scholar. This is the first part in our week-long series discussing DEI in a way that expresses doubts, allows for eye-opening revelations, and relies on inquiry. Also, as a bit of an appetizer, we poke gentle fun at "Woke Kindergarten," which is a real thing. "Real" being defined as, the curriculum costs schools that choose to participate $250,000. Hinton’s book is titled, The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row. Then we hear Mike’s Wednesday Spiel about Kenneth Eugene Smith’s recent execution by nitrogen hypoxia. Jeremy Hobson has been hosting The Middle, a call-in public radio program. That sounds scintillating enough, but it gets even spicier when you learn that the show is dedicated to non-extremism. As much as this reasonable-seeming description might evoke thoughts of high-minded even-handedness, in practice it's actually quite exciting and exceedingly rare.
