The Miami Hurricanes will get a serious boost in recruiting thanks to a great start to the 2024 football season. Not only did Miami enjoy a standout performance and a blowout win, but in-State rivals Florida and Florida State are both in disarray. The Miami Hurricanes now look like the team to beat in the ACC. The Hurricanes brutalized the Florida Gators week one, while Florida State and Clemson are both winless to start the season. Canes head coach Mario Cristobal was asked how his team will handle success this season. He said his team needs to “stay mad. You should be very driven and hungry, and you should be pissed.” Cristobal noted that for as well as his team played in Gainesville, they left some important plays on the field. The Miami Hurricanes showed tons of poise in their blowout 41-17 win at the Florida Gators. Quarterback Cam Ward said after the win that Hurricanes practices - with crowd noise blaring through speakers - was louder than The Swamp and their 93,000 in attendance. Miami coaches did an impeccable job preparing their players for hostility. Ward, the Washington State transfer, had a nearly perfect debut behind center for Miami. He completed 74 percent of his passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns. 298 of his 385 yards came on completions of 15 or more years. The Hurricanes were creating chunk plays throughout. Host Alex Donno reminds listeners that Ward is a professional quarterback who decided to play one final year of college. He had briefly declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. Receiver Xavier Restrepo recorded his seventh game with at least 100 receiving yards. Only Andrew Johnson (8) has had more 100 games than Restrepo since 1996. Miami’s defensive line showed great depth. Despite losing their most feared pass rusher, Rueben Bain, early in the contest, they were able to generate eight tackles for loss, three sacks, and consistent pressure. The Hurricanes defensive backs also played very well despite being considered a question mark. The Miami Hurricanes manhandled the Florida Gators 41-17 in their 2024 football opener. New starting quarterback Cam Ward dissected the defense, throwing for 385 yards with three touchdowns. Cam Ward threw for 321 yards and three touchdown passes in his Miami debut, leading the 19th ranked Hurricanes to a statement-making 41-17 road win over the Florida Gators. The blowout win put an emphatic end to the Gators' 33-game win streak in their home openers, dating all the way back to 1991. The 41 points put up by Miami is the most the Gators have allowed in a home opener in the history of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, aka The Swamp. The Hurricanes put up 500+ yards of offense. Ward, the senior transfer QB from Washington St, completed 26-35 passes for 385 yards, including scoring tosses to Cam McCormick, (9 yds) Xavier Restrepo, (24 yds) and Jacolby George. (23 yds) Ward is so good and has such a great command on the field that he is making Hurricanes fans so much hope that they might (finally) have another great QB at Quarterback U. They might be right. Restrepo led Miami with 7 catches for 112 yards and the TD. Damien Martinez, who transferred from Oregon St, ran for 65 yards on 15 carries for Miami. Mark Fletcher, Jr added two rushing touchdowns. ----- 'LIVE' Instant Reaction from Jim GRIES Grieshaber ----- The Hurricanes dominated up front, with both the offensive and defensive lines asserting their will against the Gators all afternoon. Miami safety Mishael Powell picked off Mertz and ran it back 67 yards to set up another score. Mertz, a preseason awards contender, finished with just 91 yards passing before being knocked out of the game on a hit when he threw an interception. Montrell Johnson Jr ran for 106 yards for the Gators, but most of that came on his 71-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. The Miami defense was outstanding for the entire game, holding the gators to 17 points and just 261 yards of offense. The Hurricanes got the ball to start the second half, and went right down the field to score a touchdown and make it 31-10. The six-play, yard drive was a thing of beauty, with Ward hitting big passes to Restrepo and Fletcher, Jr, who took it in from a yard out for his 2nd score of the day. Miami will definitely be a problem for teams this season. The Canes are looking to make the twelve-team playoff and compete for their first national championship since 2001. Mario Cristobal is working to fix an area that failed Miami last season. Cristobal revealed in his weekly news conference that he has hired a time management coach to ensure they follow their process late in games. Last season, Miami neglected to take a knee to run out the clock against Georgia Tech. Cristobal did not reveal who the time management coach will be, but says he will help them “over harp” to make sure their process is followed properly. The Miami Hurricanes are looking to build championship level depth. Miami is expected to boast one of the top defensive lines and offensive lines in America. Freshman defensive tackle Justin Scott was recently named to the On3 Sports Preseason Freshman All-American Team.
