College employee accused of secretly recording women for 15 years, police say
11/8/2024
A Davidson College employee who was charged with secret peeping earlier this month could have secretly recorded dozens of women going back as far as 15 years, Mooresville detectives said.
"It's kind of crazy, I don't even know what to say," said a student at Davidson College.
Jeremy Michael Whitworth was arrested on Nov. 2. Davidson College confirmed that Whitworth was an employee in the school's facilities department. Mooresville police said Whitworth is an electrician by trade and has done side work in people's homes for years. Detectives said they found multiple hard drives in Whitworth's attic containing footage that goes back to at least 2018.

NC Democrats say they broke the legislative supermajority as several races head to possible recounts
11/7/2024
North Carolina Democrats say they have broken the Republican supermajority in the state legislature after the 2024 election cycle, and therefore, the GOP's ability to override the governor's veto without cross-party collaboration.
This supermajority allowed the party to pass conservative legislation, like tighter abortion restrictions, without support from Gov. Cooper.
However, many of these close-call races that flip state House of Representative seats from red to blue are headed for a recount.
The General Assembly has 170 seats in total: 120 of them in the House of Representatives and 50 of them in the Senate.

Election Day is here: What to know in the Carolinas
11/5/2024
Election Day 2024 arrived Tuesday — with tens of millions of Americans having already cast their ballots. Those include record numbers in Georgia, North Carolina and other battleground states that could decide the winner.
As of Monday, Associated Press tracking of advance voting nationwide showed roughly 82 million ballots already cast — slightly more than half the total number of votes in the presidential election four years earlier. That's driven partly by Republican voters, who were casting early ballots at a higher rate than in recent previous elections after a campaign by former President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee to counter the Democrats' longstanding advantage in the early vote.
Despite long lines in some places and a few hiccups that are common to all elections, early in-person and mail voting proceeded without any major problems. That included in the parts of western North Carolina hammered last month by Hurricane Helene. State and local election officials, benefiting from changes made by the Republican-controlled legislature, pulled off a herculean effort to ensure residents could cast their ballots as they dealt with power outages, lack of water and washed out roads.
By the time early voting in North Carolina had ended on Saturday, over 4.4 million voters — or nearly 57% of all registered voters in the state — had cast their ballots. As of Monday, turnout in the 25 western counties affected by the hurricane was even stronger at 59% of registered voters, state election board Executive Director Karen Brinson Bell said.
