„Man tut wohl, ,Daphnis und Chloe’ alle Jahr einmal zu lesen“, so äußerte sich Goethe über diese unzweifelhaft schönste Liebesgeschichte aller Zeiten. Man kennt die Namen Daphnis und Chloë. In dem raffiniert erzählten Roman des griechischen Dichters Longos (2. Jh. n. Chr.) entdecken zwei Hirtenkinder Liebe und Sinnlichkeit, und das ist mit so hinreißender Natürlichkeit und Delikatesse der Empfindung erzählt, dass man Goethe Recht geben muß. Gedacht jedenfalls hat Longos die Geschichte „dem Kranken zur Heilung, dem Trauernden zum Trost, dem Liebeskundigen zur Erinnerung, dem Unkundigen zur lehrenden Vorbereitung. Denn keiner ist je dem Eros entflohen.“
