3279 - UNRWA’s Critical Work In Gaza; Big Plastic’s Recycling Lies w/ Bill Deere, Richard Wiles

2/20/2024
It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Bill Deere, director of the Washington office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), to discuss the ongoing situation with the agency in Gaza. Then, she speaks with Richard Wiles, President of The Center for Climate Integrity (CCI), to discuss the recent report the CCI issued about the plastics industry. First, Emma runs through updates on the UN’s ceasefire vote, the ICJ’s hearings on Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, the Knesset’s attempt to expel Ofer Cassif, the decimation of Gaza, the expansion of Israel’s war, Trump’s demanding lead over the GOP, Alabama’s Supreme Court decision to further clamp down on reproductive rights, and West Virginia’s criminalization of librarians, before watching some of the major public actions in Europe ahead of Julia Assange’s extradition trial. Bill Deere then joins, diving right into the history of UNRWA’s founding in the wake of the 1948 Nakba as a “temporary” service to aid Palestinian refugees, that has since taken on a breadth of responsibility to feed, educate, and medicare millions of refugees across Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza in the 75 years since, working as a primary healthcare network, an education provider, and the primary humanitarian assistance provider, with little to no development towards an ends to their work. After touching on the overwhelming pressure that faces the 30k workers at UNRWA, Deere and Emma walk through the recent expansion of UNRWA activity in Gaza as Israel’s ethnic cleansing of the region has progressed, made all the more difficult by the devastating conditions and the active obstruction from Israeli demonstrators. Next, Bill briefly walks through the recent allegations of UNRWA involvement in 10/7, including Israel’s refusal to provide UNRWA with the actual proof, UNRWA’s decision to nonetheless fire those allegedly involved, and the international community’s revocation of funding in response, before touching on the devastating impact of that funding, and the ongoing attempts to keep UNRWA operating. Wrapping up, Deere explores the work UNRWA does with the Biden Administration, and what those of us outside of Government and NGOs can do to help. Richard Wiles then dives right into the myth of single-use plastic recycling and the recent revelations around the oil and gas industry’s multi-decade attempt to keep the plastics industry thriving at the expense of humanity. Wiles walks through the failure of the industry to push landfills and incineration as appropriate plastic disposal methods in the mid-1900s due to their obvious environmental impacts, looking to recycling as their answer – despite myriad internal studies that had shown it to be an expensive and wasteful process – presenting public demonstration project after public demonstration project alongside large sums of money to bring state and local governments on board with their bunk science. Wrapping up, Wiles and Emma explore the various legal battles going on in an attempt to hold the industry accountable for their societal harms, and what to expect from them moving forward. Emma also expands on the recent decision out of Alabama to categorize frozen embryos as children. And in the Fun Half: Emma discusses Rashida Tlaib’s call for Michigan voters to use the primary to pressure Biden, and MSNBC’s unsurprising take that it will cost Biden the election nine months from now. Tom from Newton discusses the politics of tech and teens, Emma dives into the ICJ case over Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, and Tim Scott continues his audition for VP by throwing Nikki Haley under the bus on Fox. Donald Trump struggles with the Black vote, Bernie can’t seem to find the words “ceasefire,” “genocide,” or “apartheid” when it comes to Israel, and Mario in Georgia explores the failures of police training, plus, your calls and IMs! 3278 - Trump Fined $355 MILLION; All Eyes On Gaza; Black Studies In America w/ Abdul Alkalimat

2/19/2024
Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Abdul Alkalimat, professor of African American Studies & library and information science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, to discuss his book The History of Black Studies. First, Emma runs through updates on the rising Gaza death count, the crippling of Nasser Hospital, the expansion of Israel’s ground offensive, Biden issuing another ceasefire veto, another ICJ case, Russia’s recent offensive in Ukraine, Trump’s abortion ban, EV sales, forever chemicals, Wisconsin’s gerrymandering, and Pakistan’s election, before diving into Fox’s coverage of Trump’s recent massive fine from the state of New York. Professor Abdul Alkalimat then joins, diving right into the founding of Black studies in the US over the 1960s and 70s, serving as a professionalization and a manifestation of a long history of Black intellectual tradition and social movements that US higher education and academia all but ignored. Expanding on this, Professor Alkalimat dives into the convergence of disciplines in the creation of Black studies, picking up on the tradition of black intellectual history, and taking advantage of a wide range of subjects in their attempt to best understand and interpret the Black experience. Next, Emma and Abdul tackle the rediscovery of Black intellectual history in the academic context through the creation of Black studies, bringing to light the incredible educational power of social movements – from Black Power and Civil Rights to New Communism and the Women’s Movement – to raise new questions about society and redefine how we thought about race, both domestically and internationally. After walking through his concepts of deficit, difference, and dependency that undergird racism in the US, Professor Alkalimat touches once again on how Black studies works to redefine, recontextualize, and challenge mainstream notions of US and global society, as well as the Black experience itself, before wrapping up the interview with the primary challenges facing the current era in the struggle for Black self-determination. Emma also watches recent statements from Lula da Silva on Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza with the West's support. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Mitch from Houston about the liberal fatigue seen in response to both the COVID-19 Pandemic and Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Gaza, Hannah from San Diego discusses her experiences with discrimination as a Jewish college student, and NPR and NBC join hands to present Trump’s new, incredibly rational 16-week abortion ban. Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro beef over who’s the better fascist when it comes to US support for Israel, plus, your calls and IMs! 3277 - Crime, Immigration, Wrong Lessons & Voting For The Weakest Adversary w/ Olayemi Olurin

2/16/2024
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with political commentator Olayemi Olurin to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the totally natural passing of Alexei Navalny, Israel’s raiding of Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, Israel’s new West Bank settlement program, ceasefire calls from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, one of the GOP’s countless impeachment shams, student debt relief, US aid to Israel, Amazon joining Elon Musk’s challenge to the NLRB, same-sex marriage in Greece, New York’s redistricting, Donald Trump’s legal woes, and the IRS’ tax filing pilot, before watching Tucker Carlson’s attempt to defend his Putin interview. Olayemi Olurin then joins, diving right into her insight into New York’s ongoing manufactured crises around crime and immigration, particularly from her perspective as a defense attorney. Olurin first looks to the evil of Eric Adams as she explores the roots of these “crises” in the NYC Mayor and the New York Democratic machine, diving into his ongoing attack on bail reform, and how the bail system serves as economic leverage for prosecutors, before touching on the potential ends of the FBI’s investigations into his campaign. Next, Olay walks Sam and Emma through the recent Democratic endorsement of the New York Democrats’ moderate push after Tom Suozzi’s victory in NY-3, looking at the insanity of presenting Long Island politics as “normal,” and tackling Democrats’ insistence on remaining outrageously out of touch with their constituents. She also discusses the tactic of voting for the weakest adversary, before wrapping up the interview by touching on the unsurprising fact of the Democratic Party’s support for Israel. And in the Fun Half: Emma explores the NYT’s recent kind-hearted coverage of Israel’s (self-proclaimed) fascist West Bank settlers, Caleb from Trenton tackles the pervasion of Nazi propaganda in the US, Guy from Jupiter discusses accountability for exploiters of undocumented labor, and Matt Taibbi continues to struggle with his breakup with Elon Musk, now one-year out. Tucker Carlson marvels at the existence of global capitalism in Russia, Tim Pool rants about how nobody cares about Kristen Stewart or how she looks, and Candace Owens calls women “the new perverts”, plus, your calls and IMs! 3276 - ‘Care’ Under Capitalism; Pakistan’s Elections Explained w/ Premilla Nadasen, Hasan Ali

2/15/2024
It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Premilla Nadasen, professor of history at Barnard College, to discuss her recent book Care: The Highest Stage of Capitalism. Then, she speaks with Hasan Ali, journalist reporting on US foreign policy and South Asian politics, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "The Unexpected and Uncertain Result of Pakistan’s Elections." First, Emma runs through updates on the IDF’s raid of Al Nasser, the shooting at the Chief’s Super Bowl Parade, Donald Trump’s legal woes, polling coming out of Michigan, the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, NY Democrats’ willful ignorance, the Texas National Guard, and Indonesian election results, before watching some commentary from orphaned children in Gaza. Professor Premilla Nadasen then dives right into the role of the pandemic in exposing the massive societal gaps in our appreciation for care work, before stepping back to look at what exactly “care work” entails, and how the industry is framed as necessary and “essential” as laborers receive little to no benefits for their work and no support from the government. Expanding on this, Professor Nadasen walks through the makeup of the industry’s workforce, its evolution after taking off at the onset of the neoliberal era, and the role undermining the welfare state played in maintaining insecurity among marginalized segments of the population, pushing them into the unregulated field of care work. After looking at the hypocrisy this creates – that of forcing women out of their families to take care of the children of the wealthier – Premilla walks through the importance of supporting care work outside of the marketplace, and wraps up with a brief assessment of the role of social reproduction in care work. Hasan Ali then quickly runs through the political evolution of Imran Khan, from cricket star to military-backed Trumpian populist to politically imprisoned anti-military martyr, working up to the recent mass repression of Khan’s PTI party members ahead of Pakistan’s 2024 election, and the massive attempt by the military to steal the election out of PTI’s grasps. After running through Khan’s antagonistic relationship with the USA and CIA, Ali explores the intense backlash to the military’s attempt to steal the election, and what to expect heading forward if the PTI is truly able to come out as victors. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the recent reporting around Israel’s murder of a 6-year-old Palestinian girl, Brian from the Chicago Suburbs calls in about the plague of corporate landlords, and a caller from Columbus discusses the failure of the lesser-of-two-evils framing. Donald Trump flips over questions about his mental acuity, Bob from Maryland tackles the uselessness of wish casting on the left, and Matt Walsh explains why you can solve homelessness by ending homelessness, plus, your calls and IM's! 3275 - Being A Trauma Doctor In Gaza & Unionizing Amazon In Kentucky

2/14/2024
It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Griffin Ritze, a union organizer at Amazon's largest air hub in Kentucky, Amazon KCVG, and Marcio Rodriguez, a Planeside Ramp worker and member of the Amazon Labor Union-KCVG organizing committee, to discuss their efforts to ratify their constitution and file with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for a union election. Then, Sam speaks with Dr. Thaer Ahmad, emergency room physician and assistant program director of the Advocate Christ Emergency Medicine Residency Program, to discuss his recent experience volunteering at the Al Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip. First, Sam runs through updates on the GOP finally succeeding in the impeachment of Sec. Mayorkas, Pennsylvania Democrats’ victory, minimum wage legislation, Israel’s siege of Rafah, the US State Department’s weapons “review,” and Pakistani elections, before diving into Tom Suozzi’s victory in the NY-3 special election to replace George Santos. Griffin Ritze then joins, diving right into the major factors behind the beginning of the unionization effort at KCVG, with Amazon cutting benefits amid rising inflation and internal dissent, alongside the labor victory at Amazon JFK-8. After touching on his firing just weeks ago in the lead-up to an election filing, Ritze wraps up by expanding on the major problems with the working conditions at the KCVG Amazon air freight location, and what we can do to support their fight. Dr. Thaer Ahmad then walks through his assessment of the already shaky state of the healthcare system in pre-October 7th Gaza, as well as his relationship to the healthcare system, as a first-generation Palestinian-American doctor, before tackling the extensive effort it took to get into Gaza as a healthcare worker. Next, Dr. Ahmad explores the extreme changes in quality of life in Southern Gaza from his previous experiences providing healthcare, parsing through the impact of mass displacement into Rafah alongside the dwindling number of functioning hospitals in the region creating a system of severely overworked, underfunded, and under-resourced healthcare workers. After looking at the impact of the mass starvation and water scarcity on health, Thaer explores the constant siege on hospitals, even in the south of Gaza, and the clear goal of extending the ethnic cleansing until Gaza is gone, also expanding on the massive impact of the violent occupation on children in Gaza. Wrapping up, Dr. Ahmad dives into the insanity of Israel’s backers revoking aid for UNRWA, the devastating impact of the blockage of aid to Gaza, and the US’ insistence on not going around it, before wrapping up with what we can do to help get humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Channel 4 once again confront an Israeli spox. over the lack of evidence around their UNRWA claims, MSNBC tiptoes around addressing the Nakba, and Michael Cohen makes some claims about Trump’s nepotism. Kevin from Detroit highlights the ‘Listen to Michigan’ Campaign to pressure Biden and Democrats over their support for Israeli apartheid, Mo from Texas parses through issues of empathy and healthcare in the US, and Juliet from Portland tackles trans marginalization in queer community. Steve Bannon talks about American apartheid, the MR Crew explores the disappearance of competitive US House districts, and Dana Bash discusses some factors in Tom Suozzi’s victory. 2/13/2024
It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Luke Goldstein, writing fellow at The American Prospect, to discuss his reporting on the special election being held today in New York's 3rd Congressional District. First, Sam and Emma run through updates into the Senate’s military aid deal, the House GOP’s Mayorkas Impeachment 2.0, flight attendant labor action, Joe Biden’s limp warnings to Israel, inflation, and Kari Lake’s Senate candidacy, before diving into the response to the Senate’s Foreign Aid bill for Ukraine and Israel. Luke Goldstein then joins, diving right into his assessments of NY-3’s special election candidates, walking through Democrat Tom Suozzi’s relationship to Israel-aligned PACs, as well as his relationship to the NY Democratic establishment, and the GOP’s Mazi Pilip’s role as an ex-IDF member with a shady financial past, before focusing in the primary fighting grounds of support for Israel and general conservatism. Stepping back, Goldstein walks through Suozzi’s connections to Jay Jacobs, Chair of the NYS Democratic Committee and head of the NY Dems’ right-wing shift that lost the Democrats the House in 2022, before looking at both Suozzi and Pilip’s desire to separate themselves from their national party leadership, and wrapping up with an assessment of their chances. Sam and Emma also dive into the King of Jordan’s recent appearance alongside Biden, Biden’s insistence on looking weak to everyone, whether it be over immigration or Israel, and conclude the free half by looking at the continuing action in Israel to block aid to Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Jon Stewart catching flack from the libs over stating Biden’s age, watch Tucker get repeatedly cucked by Putin, and chat with Lefty Paul Ryan about talking to your lib friends. Femme Shapiro bravely uses her Daily Wire platform to uplift child labor, plus, your calls and IMs! 3273 - How Working Class Voters Became Up For Grabs w/ Lainey Newman

2/12/2024
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Lainey Newman, research assistant at Harvard Law School, to discuss her recent book Rust Belt Union Blues: Why Working-Class Voters Are Turning Away from the Democratic Party, co-authored with Theda Skocpol. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s bombing of the Palestinians taking refuge in Rafah, Biden and Trump’s varying support for war, the election to fill George Santos’ seat, the House GOP goes after Mayorkas… again, Pakistani election results wrap up, and Matt Gaetz’s ethics hearings continue, also touching on Bibi Netanyahu’s recent appearance on Fox News to touch on Israel’s ongoing war against “barbarism” and to save “civilization.” Lainey Newman then joins, diving right into her research methods compiling and analyzing archival, interview, and ethnographic data exploring the political evolution of the Rust Belt’s “union-man” archetype – also touching connection to the region. Next, Newman dives into her exploration of the influence of unions as third places and integral parts of community infrastructure in the Rust Belt, tackling the role they played throughout much of the 20th Century, playing host to community events, local organizing, religious affairs, as well as disseminating important news and political developments, alongside its role as a collective bargaining unit. Moving forward, Lainey walks Sam and Emma through the disappearance of this third-place over the second half of the century, with the collapse of steel regulation and rise of neoliberalism obliterating the union jobs and general population of the Rust Belt, and thus killing the major progressive counterweight to conservative community institutions and third places. After tackling the role of unions in bolstering race relations, and the role the Democratic Party played in the downfall of unionism, Newman wraps up with a quick assessment of union politics heading into the 2024 election. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the mass ongoing repression of Palestinian sympathies in Israel, Andrew from Chicago explores the future of housing reform in Chicago and beyond, and RFK gets inter-Kennedy pushback over the use of his family’s pictures in a Super Bowl ad. Ehab from Tucson parses through the difficult questions of voting amid Biden’s support for Israel’s genocide – alongside the likelihood of any institutional awareness – Sarah from Chicago explores the influence of Israel’s occupation of Palestine on Islamophobia in the US, and Donald Trump flexes on those parasitic NATO allies we have. 2/9/2024
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Ryan Grim, D.C. Bureau Chief at The Intercept and co-host of Counter Points, to round up the week in news. First, then run through updates on Israel’s expanding (and failing) assault on Gaza, the White House’s Leahy report, Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, immigration, inflation, and Missouri abortion law, before diving into Biden’s recent highlighting of an admittedly editorialized Special Council report on his handling of classified documents and the state of his memory. Ryan Grim then joins, diving right into his take on the insanity of the recent Special Council report coming out of Merrick Garland’s DOJ, the insanity of Biden’s response, and why it’s kind of his fault anyway, before touching on the other White House report on the Leahy law, and why Biden has not given Netanyahu any reason to stop his genocide. Next, Grim parses through the recent election interference coming out of Pakistan, with the former members of politically imprisoned Imran Khan’s PTI party seemingly having a resounding victory taken away from them through bribery, torture, and intimidation, also touching on his questioning of a State Department spokesperson on the issue, and what to expect from the authoritarian maneuver going forward. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the right-wing infighting over the recent immigration bill, the insanity of the abuses migrants are facing in the US, and the race for George Santos’ congressional seat. Rickey from San Diego gives some commentary on the various genocide cases against Israel, Ethan from LA discusses Joe Biden and Democrats’ ideological take on the border, and Tony from Baltimore asks some questions about wealth inequality and the housing market, plus, your calls and IMs! 3271 - Freedom Through Economic Rights; US Investors Pillage Honduras w/ Mark Paul, Guillame Long

2/8/2024
It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Mark Paul, assistant professor of economics at Rutgers University, to discuss his recent book The Ends of Freedom: Reclaiming America’s Lost Promise of Economic Rights. Then, she speaks with Guillaume Long, former foreign minister of Ecuador and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), to discuss his recent piece published Foreign Policy entitled "How a Start-Up Utopia Became a Nightmare for Honduras." First, Emma runs through updates on US military action in Iraq, Bibi’s insistence on continuing his genocide in Gaza, Biden’s attempt to patch things up over that ol’ ethnic cleansing, Biden’s border plan, Trump’s legal battles, Marianne Williamson’s candidacy, climate change, a new report on the incredible success of gender-affirming care, and Bolsonaro’s alleged crimes, also watching Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s incredible speech on the House floor condemning US support for Netanyahu’s genocide. Professor Mark Paul then joins, diving right into the inspiration for his piece on an Economic Bill of Rights (and his economic work as a whole) in seeing the richest nation in history make its citizens suffer through the 2008 financial crisis, both conceptualizing that wealth and why GDP doesn’t present the full picture of a country’s well being under capitalism. Expanding on this, Professor Paul steps back and examines the difference between the negative rights (freedom from X) outlined in the US Constitution, and the positive rights (freedom TO X) that folks like FDR – and some framers – enumerated, and the central importance of promoting freedom – not just protecting it. After walking Sam and Emma through the role of the Civil Rights Movement in carrying forward FDR’s anti-capitalist torch, and touching on the role of the Federal Reserve in abandoning its responsibility to manage employment, Mark Paul tackles the complimentary prongs of a jobs guarantee and a universal basic income, working together to rebalance the labor market and present a genuine choice in how workers contribute to society. Wrapping up, they parse through the more abstract element of what “freedom” can mean and assess how the US still fails to deliver on its negative freedoms. Guillaume Long then runs through a brief explanation of the evolution of Honduran politics in the wake of the 2009 US-supported coup and the decade of authoritarianism that followed, before stepping back to walk through the parallel rise of Honduras’ ZEDEs – special economic development zones that offer near-complete autonomy to corporations over swaths of Honduran territory – despite large backlash from the Honduran public and legal world. After parsing through some of the details of Honduras’ major ZEDEs, and the central role the issue played in the election of leftist Xiomara Castro in 2021, Long walks Emma through the growing efforts against the abuses of corporations, the Western-backed private court that is pushing back, and what to expect as this battle comes to a head. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they assess the insanity of Fox’s recent broadcasting of a full assault of a migrant, Armando from Portland dives into the devastation facing young men in Gaza, and Joe Rogan and Aaron Rodgers go full LeBron-Wade as they effortlessly flow between transphobic bigotry, pseudo-anti capitalism, and pure misinformation. Bro Flamingo gives some updates on his union experiences, Tommy Tuberville questions Biden’s mental capacities, the right continues its attack on education, and George Santos gloats about the GOP’s failures in the House, plus, your calls and IMs! 3270 -The Unabated Red State Assault On Trans Rights & Your Food Via Prison Labor

2/7/2024
It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with independent journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the state of anti-trans legislation moving its way around the country in 2024. Then, they speak with Margie Mason & Robin McDowell, investigative reporters for the Associated Press, to discuss their recent reporting on prison labor in the United States. And in the Fun Half, Tim Heidecker makes a special appearance! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the House GOP blowing their majority, Donald Trump’s legal woes, the Nevada election, UAW expansion, Ronna McDaniel, and the IRS, also watching MTG reflect on the recent failures of her and her cohorts. Erin Reed then joins, diving right into the busy 2024 in state-level anti-trans legislation in the US, first parsing through the media’s insistence on emphasizing bigoted and misinformed perspectives – as seen in the New York Times’s recent piece by Pamela Paul – and how the arguments seen in those texts are perfectly reflected in the statehouse hearings in red states. Expanding on this, Reed walks through the major legislative developments in the anti-trans fascism of the US, including Indiana’s school-snitch forms, the plethora of legislation coming out of Missouri and Iowa, and Florida’s Real ID bill, before wrapping up by looking at the major donors behind the GOP’s tactic of all-out transphobia. Margie Mason and Robin McDowell then walk Sam and Emma through their research into the thriving industry of Prison labor in the US, with a particular focus on the agricultural industry and how it presents a clear thread on the US’ evolution from a Slavery economy to the Prison-Industrial Complex. They then look to the Louisiana Angola Prison as a perfect representation of this, literally evolving from a plantation to a prison over Reconstruction, helping them to tackle the role of the 13th Amendment in pushing this development, before parsing through the major labor rights issues involved in prison labor, and how states do (and don’t) regulate it. Wrapping up, Mason and McDowell explore the reactions from major industries and corporations that benefit from prison labor to the growing transparency around the issue, and what changes to look for moving forward. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Tim Heidecker as he and Sam put aside their differences in appreciation of the true journalism that the US so lacks today. Expanding on this, they parse through Tim’s in-depth report on Tim Pool’s too-easily digestible content, explore some industry musings on what could be going on behind the scenes at the Compound™, and ponder the likelihood of an FBI infiltration into the TimCast team. Sam and Emma also parse through the unsurprising reports coming out about the dearth of proof in Israel’s claims about UNRWA involvement on October 7th, and have an expansive conversation on Democrats’ (and the media’s) insistence on fully embracing Donald Trump’s framing on the immigration debate. Tucker Carlson and Brett Weinstein ponder gender ideology, plus, your calls and IMs! 3269 - Boeing's Falling Apart & Trump's Immigration Gift w/ Katya Schwenk

2/6/2024
It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with journalist Katya Schwenk, to discuss her recent reporting on Boeing published in The Lever. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Blinken’s visit to the Middle East, Amnesty International’s report on Israel’s murders in the West Bank, the dearth of evidence of actual UNRWA involvement in October 7th, Michigan Democrats’ action against Biden’s Gaza policy, the GOP’s immigration bill fiasco, the Mayorkas impeachment, Harlan Crow’s suspect finances, college student unions, and another corrupt funder of Eric Adams’ mayoral campaign, also parsing through Mayor Abdullah Hammoud of Dearborn, Michigan’s statements on voters’ and Arab-Americans’ issues with Joe Biden. Katya Schwenk then joins, diving right into the most recent Boeing scandal, kicking off this January when the door panel blew out in an Alaska Airlines flight over Portland, and how it put the spotlight back on Boeing’s string of fatal crashes at the end of the 2010s, before briefly touching on the (nonexistent) role DEI played in these malfunctioning. Stepping back, Schwenk dives into Boeing’s launch of a new Max 737 in 2018 despite internal awareness of various software issues, the company’s skirting of certain federal regulations, and their eventual (minimal) fraud charges from Trump’s DOJ during his final weeks in office, also exploring the DOJ’s eventual agreement to drop charges if the company met compliance over the next three years – a period that ended just two days after the recent Alaska Airlines emergency landing. Expanding on this, Katya looks at the reassessment of this deal between Boeing and the US Government, and whether the obvious continuation of Boeing’s unregulated production issues will be called into question, or if the US will continue to allow a major US company to skirt regulation, before wrapping up, by walking Sam and Emma through the major financial success of Boeing. Sam and Emma also dive into the collapse of Biden’s immigration deal with the GOP, and parse through each side of the bipartisan opposition to the Biden Administration’s “Trump-Era policy.” And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Dave Rubin use racism to back his racism, Tim from Chicago shines a light on a MAJOR blind spot heading into the 2024 election, and a Syrian student from Germany explores the major issues with the monolithic representation of Islamist movements in Western media. Ronald Raygun provides great commentary on Biden’s ongoing immigration deal fiasco, plus, your calls and IMs! 3268 - Good Jew Bad Jew: Racism, Anti-Semitism and the Assault On Meaning. w/ Steven Friedman

2/5/2024
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Steven Friedman, director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Johannesburg, to discuss his recent book Good Jew Bad Jew: Racism, anti-Semitism and the assault on meaning. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Biden’s strikes on Iraq and Syria, environmental disaster in Los Angeles and Chile, Israel’s assault on Gaza, the DOA US border deal, Biden’s dismal polling, US labor action, Mike Johnson’s Israel aid, and issues in Boeing and Tesla production, before parsing through the Democrats once again choosing to capitulate to far-right policy despite no electoral benefit, with little to no pushback from the US media. Steven Friedman then joins, parsing through the birth of his recent work from the severe backlash to anti-Zionist and anti-racist Jews as “self-hating,” alongside a severe perversion of the concept of anti-Semitism from the hatred of Jews as a people, to a narrow opposition to the apartheid state of Israel, also touching on the growing union between the state of Israel and the biggest celebrity symbols of anti-Semitism. Stepping back, Friedman explores the evolution of Zionism in relation to a largely Europe-based Jewry, with OG Zionists like Theodor Herzl and A.D. Gordon seeing the exclusion of the Jewish people from the European elite as a cultural failing of their people – one that can be solved via the establishment of a Zionist state and thus a Zionist elite. Expanding on this, Friedman walks Sam and Emma through Europe’s perspective on Zionism, with German and British elites highlighting the roles Israel could play in both acting as a European-aligned outpost in the Middle East and as a way to encourage the expulsion of Jews from Europe. Next, Steven back to the establishment of Israel as an attempt by certain people to Europeanize the Jewish people, through a complete embrace of Europe’s fashionable ideologies of nationalism and colonialism, particularly as Jewish discrimination in Europe largely excluded them from these developing regimes, and touches on the nature of the Holocaust as exemplary of the spectrum of humanity with which the West viewed the rest of the world. Wrapping up, Friedman, Sam, and Emma explore the history of the relationship between South Africa and Palestine and what the relationship between democracy and apartheid tells us about Western ideology. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the impending end of Kyrsten Sinema, watch Jack Posobiec connect the strings on Taylor Swift’s DNC ties, and discuss Connecticut’s new debt cancellation plan. Thomas Friedman returns to the New York Times to remind us of his extraordinary bigotry, John Kirby struggles not to say the obvious regarding US military action in the Middle East, and the MR Crew dives into the “why” of Biden’s attempted immigration deal, plus, your calls and IMs! 3267 - Biden’s Quiet Diplomacy Failure, & The Importance of Taylor Swift w/ Jeet Heer

2/2/2024
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the US public’s opposition to Israel’s genocide in Gaza, Medicare drug price negotiations, the Child Tax Credit, a US immigration deal, GOP fundraising, Eric Adams’ fundraisers, and the NTA strike, before diving into the absurd coverage of Cori Bush’s ongoing ethics investigation. Jeet Heer then joins, diving right into the complete failure of the US’ supposed attempt to prevent Israel’s genocide in Gaza from becoming a regional conflict, first discussing Jake Sullivan’s pre-October 7th claims touting the Biden Administration’s peace in the region, before touching on Biden’s supposed “behind the scenes” talks with Israel, and the role they play in keeping his Democratic colleagues at bay. Next, they look at Biden’s ongoing attempt to normalize Israel-Saudi Arabia relations, despite that being a primary factor in Hamas’ 10/7 attacks, whether his refusal to return to the Iran Nuclear Deal plays into his belief in Trump’s Abraham Accords, and how the hell this conflict can be seen as any sort of a win for his reelection campaign. Wrapping up, Heer dives into his premonitory coverage of the right-wing’s obsession with Taylor Swift. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch House GOP’s members explain why they’re voting for the Mayorkas impeachment, a Texas convoy member explains how Jews are paying Hezbollah to invade the US even though they’re going to attack Synagogues, and Matt from Alberta discusses the chaos of Alberta’s politics under the conservative premiership of Danielle Smith. Eddie from Fort Worth dives into the story of Stetson Kennedy, Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro explain why becoming uber-wealthy is pious, actually, and Marjorie Taylor Greene tries to censure Ilhan Omar because of – get this – racism, plus, your calls and IMs! 3266 - Medical Racism; Secret US Troops In The Middle East? w/ Dr. Uché Blackstock, Ken Klippenstein

2/1/2024
It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Dr. Uche Blackstock, emergency physician and former associate professor of emergency medicine at the New York University, to discuss her recent book Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons With Racism In Medicine. Then, she is joined by Ken Klippenstein, investigative reporter at the Intercept, to discuss his recent reporting on the U.S.'s covert military presence in the Middle East. First, Emma runs through updates on the US lawsuit against Biden for funding the genocide in Gaza, the genocide itself, the war’s regional expansion, US economic development, congressional policy, UAW expansion, RFK’s candidacy, and Myanmar’s secret prisons, before watching South Africa’s response to the continuing genocide in Gaza in the face of the ICJ’s ruling, and the complicity of third party states. Doctor Uché Blackstock then dives right into her background growing up within a community of Black physicians, including her mother, to becoming the first Black mother-daughter legacy graduates from Harvard Med, and touches on the impact of her mother’s passing from leukemia – largely influenced by racialized environmental risk factors – in shaping her perspective on health and race. Next, Dr. Blackstock steps back to tackle the history of Black physicians in the US, looking at the decrease in the rate of Black physicians in the US from 1910-2008, and the impact of the Flexner Report on shutting down many of the thriving Black educational medical institutions, pushing Black people away from the profession and the remaining Black physicians involved out of their communities. After touching on the importance of both policy and institutional pressure to support continued medical practice in marginalized communities, Dr. Blackstock walks Emma through the greater context of racial discrimination in medicine beyond the socioeconomic, including the bias experienced interfacing with the healthcare system, and how the industry approaches issues that predominantly impact Black people and communities of color, before wrapping up with the particular impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black communities. Ken Klippenstein then joins, briefly walking through the recent revelations to the US public of US troop activity in the Middle East, exploring why both the US and the host countries prefer to keep the presence low-key, and why that often results in the US public remaining unaware until personnel are killed. Stepping back, Ken walks Emma through the evolution of the Biden Administration’s transparency on military activity in the region – particularly in the wake of Israel’s siege on Gaza – the role the US is playing in expanding the conflict in Israel, and what to expect from this military presence moving forward. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they walk through the evolving exposé on WWE Tyrant and monopolist Vince McMahon surrounding his myriad sexual abuses, watch Tom Cotton fail to comprehend Asian identities outside of China, and parse through Nikki Haley’s reasonably friendly appearance on the Breakfast Club. Ro Khanna provides some hopeful questioning of the FBI, and Aaron calls in to discuss grappling with family’s perspective on the genocide in Gaza, plus, your calls and IMs! 3265 - Grocery Unions Fight For Better Contract In Minnesota; WIC Program Expiring

1/31/2024
It's Hump Day! And Emma is BACK! Sam and Emma speak with Rena Wong, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) local 663, to discuss the recent strike efforts by grocery workers in Minnesota. Then, they speak with Abby Vesoulis, national politics reporter at Mother Jones, to discuss her recent piece entitled "A Nixon-Era Food Program for Babies and Pregnant People Is Running Out of Cash'. First, Sam runs through updates on US retaliations to the Jordanian drone strikes, House and Senate politics, Elon’s $56 billion bummer, anti-trans legislation in Florida and Utah, DOJ proceedings against Cory Bush, Sinema’s fundraising downfall, Trump’s legal expenditures, and corporate awareness about climate change, before touching on Larry Kudlow and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s pitch to the Fox audience on the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas. Rena Wong then joins, diving right into the role of UFCW Local 663 in representing many of Minneapolis’ essential workers, and the major issues facing their treatment at the hands of their employers. Wong begins by walking through the major transformations that 663 underwent over 2023, pushed by blatant disrespect from the corporations and their proposals that completely ignored the massive sacrifice their workers undertook during the pandemic, and the incredible profits that resulted from it., tackling the issues of payment, cost of living, and inflation, as well as severe and illegal anti-union campaigns from employers. After touching on the major strike actions that Local 663 undertook last year – including one in the lead-up to Christmas – Rena wraps up with the major factors behind the union’s transformation and the central role of unions in providing employees with the tools and strategy to stand up for each other and themselves. Abby Vesoulis then walks through the major role the WIC program plays in providing millions of mothers, infants, and children in the US with proper nutrition, and the incredibly obvious benefit it provides to society, before stepping back to walk through the inner workings of the program, how it connects with mothers and children, and how it uses its funds. After touching on the GOP’s pressures to cut funding for the program, and their successful attempt to delay its funding, Vesoulis wraps up by looking at the devastating impact cuts to the program could have on millions of Americans. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Israel’s continued desecration of Palestinian civil society in Gaza and beyond, the US and IDF’s poor attempts to defend these actions, and the Israeli government’s complete lack of respect for the life of anyone – even their own hostages. They also touch on the insanity that is Donald Trump’s foreign policy, talk with Joe from Florida about his issues with the program, discuss being pro-Palestine in Europe with a caller, and watch Benny Johnson talk pop-star psyops, plus, your calls and IMs! 3264 - What’s Next After The ICJ Ruling w/ Diana Buttu

1/30/2024
It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam speaks with Diana Buttu, Palestinian analyst and former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss the International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s recent ruling in the case South Africa brought against Israel. First, Sam runs through updates on US-Israeli military action in the Middle East, the House GOP, US weapons exports, US labor action, Donald Trump, and French farmers, before admiring Florida Rep. Salazar’s poor politicking and walking through the insanity of the West revoking aid for UNRWA in the wake of the International Court of Justice’s ruling against Israel. Diana Buttu then dives into the ICJ’s recent ruling in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel over their war on Gaza, walking through the decision itself, the makeup of the justices, and why the near-unanimity in their decision is completely unsurprising considering South Africa’s overwhelming evidence, also touching on why the ICJ’s ruling is about as close to a ceasefire charge as we could’ve asked for. After walking Sam through the actual working definition of genocide, and the importance of the third-party obligations under the Genocide Convention and ICJ, Buttu assesses the active culpability of the West in Israel’s genocide, furthered by the recent revoking of funding for UNRWA. Wrapping up, they work through Israel’s response to the ICJ ruling, whether they’ll follow the decision, and what to make of much of the Israeli populace’s uncritical support for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. And in the Fun Half: Sam takes in some great Hip-Hop recommendations from the NYT’s The Daily, the Five and OAN conspire about the Taylor Swift psyop, and Tim Pool cannot STAND people doubting Trump’s anti-vax Bona Fides. The MR Crew also watches another Climate Defiance action and talks with Travis from Birmingham about the greater context of a vote for president, Ricky from San Diego dives into Biden’s support for genocide, and Penn Jillette pulls a good take out of his hat. Terrance from Laguna Beach discusses getting involved in pro-Palestinian organizing, plus, your calls and IMs! 3263 - How Covid Legal Cases Serviced Corporate Assault On The Regulatory State w/ Wendy Parmet

1/29/2024
Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Wendy Parmet, professor of law, public policy, and urban affairs at Northeastern University, to discuss her recent book Constitutional Contagion: COVID, the Courts, and Public Health. First, Sam runs through updates on the continued expansion of Israel’s war on Gaza, Israel and Co.’s response to the ICJ ruling by cutting funding to UN Aid groups, the Senate immigration deal, the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, Donald Trump’s rape case, and Texas’ secession, before parsing through Nancy Pelosi’s recent allegations that pro-Palestine protesters are just Putin-paid propagandists. Wendy Parmet then joins, diving right into the concept of public health policy, how policymakers assess the impact of their work on broader populations, and the concept of Salus populi suprema lex. Stepping back, Professor Parmet walks Sam through the factors that influence US public health policy, and how those have evolved over the last couple of centuries, first looking to the 19th Century US’s defining element of the institution of slavery, before parsing through the public health policy from vaccine mandates to sanitary measures and food quality regulations that thrived on the state and local levels, and the overwhelming belief in the superiority of common (white) welfare to individual rights. Moving into the 1900s, Parmet explores the decision of Jacobson v. Massachusetts which affirmed the state’s right to mandate vaccinations under criminal consequences, how the era’s rampant epidemics influenced the decision, and looks to the impact of WW2 and the New Deal on the understanding of rights, before tackling the evolution of individual, corporate, and religious rights’ supremacy over regulation during the second half of the century. Wendy and Sam then expand on this as they move into the 21st Century, tackling the mass politicization of the courts, the emergence of the Federalist Society, the Roberts Court’s belief in individualism, and the culmination of the GOP’s attack on the administrative state, assessing how these elements served to undermine and gut the state of US public health, coming to a head with the COVID-19 pandemic. Wrapping up, Professor Parmet tackles the current moment in US public health, and the impact of the recent decimation of the US public health system on our already fraying social contract. And in the Fun Half: Sam admires the GOP disarray caused by Biden completely capitulating to their immigration policy, talks with Ashley from Vermont about the aptly named IRS leaker Charles Littlejohn, Katrina from NoLa discusses being doxxed by Congresspeople (specifically, Majorie Taylor Greene), and Sean from Washington highlights the pro-Palestinian organizing going on in the NEA and AFT. 3262 - Texas' Succession Bluster & ICJ Rules Against Israel w/ Heather Digby Parton

1/26/2024
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the International Court of Justice’s decision in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, Biden’s cratering popularity, Trump’s torpedoing of an immigration deal, Biden’s environmental policy, Matt Gaetz’s ethics investigation, Texas’ secession, and Gov. Whitmer’s Michigan policy, before parsing through South Africa and others’ initial reactions to the ICJ’s provisional decisions made against Israel. Digby then joins, diving right into the devolution of Donald Trump over Biden’s presidency, tackling mainstream media’s hesitancy to cover it, and Nikki Haley’s successful undermining of Trump’s status within the GOP, despite his continual cucking of every other GOP candidate. Next, Digby, Emma, and Sam assess Biden’s irrational commitment to the ideology of Bibi Netanyahu, before wrapping up with the likely sacrifice of Mike Johnson, and the chaos brewing between the GOP and the federal government with Texas’ refusal of direct SCOTUS orders. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the specifics of the ICJ’s provisional orders to Israel, whether Israel will even abide by them, and how the decision provides a chance to reframe the conversation around the genocide in the West, also touching on some fake reports that came out of Israel in the wake of 10/7. Next, they look down south as they watch Ken Paxton attempt to defend Texas’ independent control over the border, with other GOP Governors toeing the line between supporting fascism and not violating the Constitution. Tim Pool gets mad that his guests keep threatening violence, and Peter Navarro gets sentenced, plus, your IMs! 3261 - Untold Palestinian History; Racism In Democratic Labor w/ Zachary Foster, Juliet Hooker

1/25/2024
It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Juliet Hooker, professor of political science at Brown University, to discuss her recent book Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics Of Loss. Then, she speaks with Zachary Foster, proprietor of the website Palestine Nexus, to discuss the events on the ground in Israel and Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on the UAW’s endorsement of Joe Biden, Israel’s siege on Gaza, the ICJ’s impending decision on Israel’s genocide, Senate and House politics, GOP fascism, and an Argentinian general strike, before parsing through Greg Abbott’s standoff with the US government, Joe Biden, and the Supreme Court over border control, and Joe Biden’s incredible willingness to capitulate. Julie Hooker then joins, diving right into her discussion of grief and grievance, and what distinguishes the pain and loss suffered under oppression, from the self-victimization and feelings of loss felt by the oppressor as equality, using moments like January 6th and the Black Lives Matter movement to contextualize this within US politics, and to highlight the grave danger to democracy that is White grievance. Next, Professor Hooker steps back and explores how Black people – largely women – are the ones forced to defend against the threat of White grievance to democracy, such as the fights for enfranchisement, student loan relief, and more. Zachary Foster then dives into his work at Palestine Nexus, and the central importance of preserving Palestinian history and culture in a world that is constantly seeking to silence and destroy it. Next, Foster steps back and walks Emma through the evolution of Palestinian identity, with documents both within the Arab world and the West referring to the Palestinian people and land as such beginning in the late 19th Century, well before the establishment of Israel, and solidly as a pre-Zionist identity. Foster and Emma then walk through the evolution of the Zionist project and its impact on the Palestinian people, with a minimal presence through the turn of the century and into the 1900s, only for the end of the British mandate and the rise of Hitler in Germany to fast track the self-proclaimed settler-colonial project. Expanding on this, Foster tackles the influence of European nationalism (and the exclusion of Jews from this process) on both forcing Zionist emigration from Europe and inspiring the settler-colonial tactics that followed, seeing the ethnic cleansing of some 750k Palestinians at the onset of the Nakba in 1948, and continuing throughout the next few years, before looking to the 1967 war, and Israel’s resulting occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights. After summarizing the ongoing occupation as a 56-year process of expulsion, land confiscation, destruction of infrastructure, and active disenfranchisement, Zachary and Emma wrap up the interview by looking at South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel, and the Zionist project’s absurdly narrow attempt to redefine genocide. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they parse through Elon Musk and Ben Shapiro’s presentation on the importance of Twitter in fighting AGAINST (?!?!) antisemitism, Elon’s added Mr. Beast conspiracy, and talk with Jacob from Flint about the emergence of Gretchen Whitmer. Stephen from Alabama does some media critique, and the MR Crew discusses the radical evolution of Greta Thunberg and the UAW’s endorsement of Joe Biden, plus, your calls and IMs! 3260 - Trump V. Biden On Labor; Columbia's Gaza Rally Attack; Live From Teacher's Picket Line

1/24/2024
It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with KJ Boyle, research assistant with The Revolving Door Project, to discuss his recent piece in The New Republic entitled "Donald Trump Is No Friend to the Working Class." Then, they speak with Prem Thakker, politics reporter at The Intercept, to discuss his recent reporting on the use of chemical weapons on pro-Palestine demonstrators at Columbia University. And THEN, they are joined by David Bedar, history teacher and member of the Newton Teacher's Association (NTA), to discuss the teacher's union ongoing strike efforts. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Donald Trump’s New Hampshire win, US strikes on Yemen and Iraq, fracturing among the House and Senate GOP, mass layoffs, Sweden’s NATO pitch, Ukraine’s defensive, and US abortion travel bans, before parsing through Nikki Haley’s response to her concrete loss in New Hampshire and Donald Trump’s response to her. KJ Boyle then joins, diving right into his assessment of the incredible flourishing of the US labor movement under President Biden – particularly coming out of Donald Trump’s administration – despite some pushback. Boyle tackles Donald Trump’s very typical GOP approach to the labor wing of his administration, appointing CEOs and union-busting lawyers to the DOL and NLRB, before stepping back to assess Biden’s appointments in Jennifer Abruzzo at the NLRB, and Julie Su as Secretary of Labor, and their importance in pushing us towards a return to the Joy Silk doctrine, and a re-establishment of US labor rights. Prem Thakker, next, walks Sam and Emma through Columbia University’s long history of student activism and divestment campaigns, beyond and including Israel, before running through a briefer summary of the recent developments on Columbia’s campus in the wake of October 7th, which have seen the disbanding of multiple pro-Palestinian student organizations and the rampant discrimination and harassment of Palestinian students and allies. Thakker wraps up with the recent attack on a Colombia protest by alleged Zionist students, and Colombia’s refusal to address the incident without extreme pressure. David Bedar joins from the picket line in Newton, MA, as he walks through the basis for the NTA’s strike in the city and the Mayor’s complete mismanagement of the education sector, from underfunding and understaffing to poor pay and absurdly poor family policy, before wrapping up the show by walking through the incredibly important role of the Newton community and alumni network in standing with the Teachers’ association, and what those of us outside of the community can do to help. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Jimmy Dore’s new alchemical grift (it’s just Silver Hawkery), Donald Trump shouts out Q in the year 2024 (and it works), and Nikki Haley’s subdued performance among the best possible electorate for her. Barbara Lee kills her debate response to Adam Schiff over calls for a ceasefire, the MR Crew watches another Israeli dissident speak out against their country’s failures and abuses, and Charlie Kirk downgrades his bigotry to purely speculative. Fox calls out the “media training” of the “Vice President” and the super mean statements by “snowflake” AOC, and the MR Crew walks through developments in the Child Tax Credit, plus, your calls and IMs!
