Today we talk about "thanksgiving" - not in a head knowledge way, as a cliche, or a superficial way, but in the very lifestyle that is built upon a heart filled to overflowing with gratitude for what God has done for us. Being thankful is God's will for us - and it is a tremendous witness to a lost and dying world. We should be people of praise and filled with joy even during the darkest hours, because God is good above all (Psalm 107). We will look at Romans 1, where Paul makes a charge that part of the downgrade of mankind is because he lacks gratitude. What a powerful verse that is! We also address anxiety and the place of gratitude in counteracting the negative things we tend to dwell on. Isaiah 33:6 tells us, "Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, and the strength of salvation. The fear of the Lord is His treasure." Instability and chaos are not the product of wisdom, something that resides with God and is given to His people who desire it. Wisdom was present in creation, before anything was made. Solomon asked for wisdom and it was said that he was the wisest man who ever lived, and yet there was a huge disconnect and he did not finish well. When God gives us wisdom, what do we do with it? We are free moral agents and can accept or reject any of it. But when we desire to be wise and act wisely, we are a blessing, preserved and stable for those around us. The Bible has much to say on this topic in both testaments. The world may see us as fools for Jesus, but we know where we are headed when our days are accomplished, and so we seek to persuade men.
