Mike Mulligan Of WSCR "The Score" Radio | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know

9/26/2023
For over a decade now Mike Mulligan has been co-hosting a popular sports talk morning show on WSCR 670 The Score, first with fellow writer Brian Hanley and then another fellow scribe, David Haugh. The shows overcame the ratings lead of Mike and Mike, then the highly successful show on ESPN pitting Mike Greenberg with Mike Golic. But “Mully,” as he’s best known, had been doing radio since the late 80s while also covering the Bulls and their first three-peat, then the Bears. He laughed when it was noted the coaches he covered were the studious Phil Jackson and the enthusiastic and gifted story teller, Dave Wannstedt. But balancing both writing and doing morning radio became too much so he gave up the writing job. Mulligan is up every weekday morning at 3. “It’s just a discipline. You just have to make sure you’re monitoring everything that happens but you’re also making sure getting five, six hours of sleep.” The Bears are the number one team in Chicago and recently went through a stunning day that included the mysterious resignation of defensive coordinator Alan Williams and quarterback Justin Fields blaming part of his difficulties on coaching. It was fuel for fire for Mully and Haugh and everyone else in town. But Mully is also and avowed White Sox fan who has seen the team have arguably its worst season ever both on and off the field. But, as Mully has said often, “I’m living the dream.” Not bad for a native Chicagoan who gets to talk about the exploits of the city’s teams on a daily basis. "Tell me a story I don’t know" is partnered with Last Word on Sports Media Podcast and sponsored by Mr. Duct. (mrductcleaning.com). And “Tell Me a Story I Don’t Know: Conversations With Chicago Sports Legends” is now available for pre-sale on Amazon books. Former MLB Pitcher/Cubs Broadcaster Jim Deshaies | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know

9/18/2023
Jim Deshaies, better known as JD, once went on a campaign to get one vote for the Hall of Fame. It was all for fun and yes, he did that one vote! Deshaies spent 12 seasons pitching in the big leagues, half of them with the Houston Astros who were then in the National League. Shortly after he retired, JD found himself in the Astros TV booth as an analyst and 16 years later, found himself in the same position at Wrigley Field. He’s been with the Cubs for the last 11 seasons adding keen observations while keeping a dry sense of humor. “Mark Grace lost his gig in Arizona," Deshaies says on the show. "The Diamondbacks came hard after Bob Brenly, (who had been with the Cubs) and Len Kasper, the teams lead TV voice said how would you like to come here?” Deshaies said yes and for the last 11 seasons has worked with Kasper and most recently, Jon “Boog” Sciambi. “ Boog’s great. We have a lot of fun.” JD has also watched this Cubs team do something few expected them to do, contend for a playoff position Deshaies notes how free agents such as Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson have made a huge difference. Bellinger signed a one year deal and Deshaies knows it will take a big number to keep him, especially with Scott Boras as his agent. Now 63, Deshaies has no intentions of retiring. He loves the gig working along side Jon “Boog” Sciambi But this native of a small town in upstate New York which is close to the Canadian border claims he have no problems if this was it. He’s had a wonderful career. For now it would appear that career is expected to continue. Chicago Radio Personality Cheryl Raye Stout | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know

9/11/2023
Cheryl Raye Stout as been covering Chicago Sports on radio for over 40 years. She’s a pioneer who battled her way through sexism to eventually be heralded as one of the most relentless and respected reporters in town. During the hey days of the Bears in the 80s, she was yelled at by the team for entering their locker room. “The practice was in Lake Forest and we were at the old Halas Hall which was a very small room. That’s when you realize you’re the only women in that room. I was with that little group as the locker room opened. I started to go in and all of a sudden the team surrounded me and started screaming at me and calling me names!” But then quarterback Jim Harbaugh eventually paved the way for her acceptance. Along the way she constantly had to prove herself during a time when women were forced to do so. But when she was foisted into the role of producing a radio talk show hosted by the popular and late Chet Coppock, Raye Stout became bold booking Dallas Green as the first guest. He was the General Manager of the Cubs and it was a big get for her, the host and her career. Raye Stout cemented her role as a top reporter breaking the news of Michael Jordan’s decision to retire and play baseball for the White Sox and then his return to the Bulls. She continues to cover every team and sports event in town for WBEZ, the NPR station and has no desire to retire. There’s a good reason for that….she’s still on top of her game! Charter/Disney Feud With WSJ's Joe Flint + Las Vegas Aces Voice TC Martin And More! | Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

9/6/2023
Off the Labor Day Holiday there's no shortage of subject matter from College Football to the loss of ESPN for a major cable communications company to the defending WNBA champs visiting the Whtie House and we're ready to tackle it all on the "Last Word On Sports Media Podcast." Host T.J. Rives returns with guests for the insight. First, he talks the impressive, but massively overhyped debut of coach Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes last weekend. This, as the Buffs played an amazing offensive game and outfought TCU in a typical scorefest for the Froggies for the CU upset win. Will the momentum continue or will Colorado unravel/have their lack of experienced talent unravel? T.J. has thoughts on that and the other big matchups on the field and the TV ratings of last weekend, as well. Then, it's a convesation with Joe Flint of the Wall Street Journal. Joe is covering the Charter/Spectrum Cable dispute with Disney/ESPN that saw the plug pulled on the ESPN channels late last week. Will it be resolved soon or is this the beginning of cable companies and others finally fighting back with ESPN? Joe has thoughts and his reporting to go over on it all. Next, it's a switch to the voice of the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces, T.C. Martin, who's fresh off a road trip that saw the defending champs visit the White House. T.C. shares what that's been like and just how much of a blast is it to call these games? T.C. also talks Pac 12 implosion and are the Raiders an afterthought already in Vegas? Former Bears Great Now Chicago Sports Radio Star Tom Waddle Part II | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know

9/4/2023
Tom Waddle figured he might be headed to Wall Street after graduating from Boston College despite being one of its all time leading receivers. But he managed to hook on with the Chicago Bears, became one of its most popular players which led to his second career in radio and TV and he remains one of Chicago’s most popular players albeit, behind a microphone. He’s spent the last 16 years partnering with Marc Silverman on ESPN 1000 where the “Waddle and Silvy” show is the longest running sports radio show in the city. In part two of this wonderfully entertaining and informative podcast, Waddle remembers the trials and tribulations of his broadcast career while also discussing the present day Chicago Bears. They’re coming off a 3 and 14 season so one figures there’s only one place to go and that’s up. But Waddle cautions thirsty Bears fans it’s not a playoff team just yet. “I’m optimistic but I’m not one who believes hey, with a couple of breaks here or there we can be playing in the NFC Championship game. To win five games would show something went drastically wrong.” He also says Justin Fields must make the next step to become a better passing quarterback. Former Bears Great Now Chicago Sports Radio Star Tom Waddle Part I | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know

8/28/2023
Tom Waddle says he never takes for granted who he was as a player with the Chicago Bears. He wasn’t their best wide receiver but he overcame size and speed to become one their most effective and popular players. Now 56, Waddle has turned that popularity into a very successful career in the media culminating with his longtime partnership with Marc Silverman on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. But getting here took plenty of grit and determination. Waddle attended Boston College where he finished first on the schools all time reception list. You would think that got him drafted in the NFL but it didn’t. His agent though, convinced the Bears to sign him and he became a fan favorite making big time catches under head coaches Mike Ditka and Dave Wanndstedt. “I can’t begin to tell you how appreciative I am to the Chicago Bears for the opportunity they gave me, to Mike Ditka for the opportunity he gave me," Waddle tells the show. Waddle grew up in Cincinnati where he watched his Reds win back to back World Series in the mid 70s. He remains a big fan of the team despite his 35 years living and thriving in Chicago. Part one of this enthralling episode goes further in examine how Waddle made it in both College and the pros. Part two will examine his rise to fame in the Chicago and what he thinks of Justin Fields and the current Bears team.
