How do we address the increase in depression, self-harm, eating disorders, and the accompanying decline in self-worth among our daughters? Our guests will include mental health professionals, authors, artists, academics, and successful women with a story to share. Join Mary Waldon, LCSW for an hour dedicated to helping young women discover who they are and all that they are capable of becoming.

Special Encore Presentation: Experiencing Functional Analytic Psychotherapy

4/16/2013
Currently, the most talked about psychotherapies are known as third wave or third generation behavior therapies. Many of these therapies are evidence-based, with randomized trials to support their efficacy. Research findings aside, there is a perception that behavior-based therapies can be overly mechanistic and dehumaninzing. This is a criticism that has no basis in regard to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy. Instead, FAP helps client and clinician develop a connection that serves as a model for the client to re-create closeness in relationships outside of session. Tune in to The Mary Waldon Show to learn more about Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) directly from Dr. Mavis Tsai, co-developer of this treatment. Dr. Tsai leads an experiential hour you do not want to miss!

Blind to Betrayal: Why We Fool Ourselves

4/9/2013
People break our trust. People lie, mislead, and behave in ways that can violate both explicit contracts like marriage or presumptive contracts like friendship. Even institutions can betray us and hurt us in ways that impact our confidence. Betrayal is fundamental to the human condition, and yet because of betrayal blindness, it often goes undetected. We are vulnerable to not being able to identify repetitive, hurtful interactions that impact our self worth and our ability to have healthy relationships. What is betrayal and how does it impact us? Why are we often blind to betrayal? How do we become aware of betrayal and heal from its effects? Tune into The Mary Waldon Show as we welcome Jennifer Freyd, Phd to help us answer these questions. Dr. Freyd is a betrayal researcher and co-author of the book Blind to Betrayal: Why We Fool Ourselves, We are Not Being Fooled. This is an hour you don't want to miss!

Your Turn for Care: Surviving the Aging and Death of the Adults who Harmed You

3/5/2013
As our population ages, people in their 40’‘s, 50‘s and 60‘s are caring for aging and ailing relatives. Rising healthcare costs, other financial stressors, diminished insurance coverage, improved healthcare that prolongs life are just some of the reasons that elderly care is becoming the responsible of relatives. But what if your elders didn’t take good care of you? What if they actually abused you or mistreated you? What if they harmed you? And now, they are old and sick, and you are faced with the choice of whether to care for them or not. It is a choice? What could this choice cost you beyond the financial? Listen in as we explore these questions with Dr. Laura Brown, author of the compelling and compassionate book, Your Turn for Care: Surviving the Aging and Death of the Adults Who Harmed You. This is an hour of understanding and comfort that I encourage you to tune into if you or someone you know is in this very sensitive and difficult situation.

Addressing the Mental Health Crisis of Military Veterans

2/19/2013
The mental health of military personnel is a women’s issue. Not only are veterans our brothers, sons, fathers, and husbands, but with women comprising 14% of active-duty personnel, they are also our sisters, daughters, mothers and wives. And in light of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta rescinding the 1994 Pentagon policy that bans women from combat, the mental health of military service personell is very likely to further expand as a women’s issue. While officials are divided about whether women will ultimately serve as infantry troops or in elite special-operations units, the recent moves of the Pentagon suggest an expansion of the role of women into the deadliest and most traumatic part of military missions. How is the trauma of war impacting our service men and women? What treatments exist to help with the wide range of trauma vets experience? Tune in for an in-depth discussion with retired Navy Commander and military psychologist Dr Mark Russell to explore this important topic.
