Come with me on a journey of re-discovery of self as I adjust to my new “normal” It’s time for me to break the silence. I am kicking off this season by sharing my own experience with domestic violence abuse. An experience that I thought I’d never have, let alone ever talk about. If you or anyone you know has been a victim of domestic violence abuse please do not be afraid to speak up and speak out. Many are suffering and need to know that their lives matter, they matter! Reach out and get the help you need before it’s too late.

I remember when I was little, my mother and I would go over my grandmother's house for Thanksgiving. It was filled with oven roasted turkey, warm butter rolls, turkey neck gravy and DRAMA! It's like every year my family waited until the right moment to let loose. All the emotional baggage they carried up until that very bite of turkey came spilling out on the table. It went from pour me another drink to don't knock down my table. Crazy right? If your family was slightly dysfunctional but you somehow managed to make it out alright, then kudos to you! I remember when I was little my cousins, and I played hide and seek. I used to hate that game, why? because I was the one afraid to go and look for people. Someone was always trying to scare me, jumping out from dark corners, yelling "Boo". It got to the point that when they played, I would sit out! I was considered a "scaredy cat" when I was younger, seemed like I was afraid of everything. As an adult my fears have grown up, some fears I have dealt with while others hang on for the ride. "Honk for Jesus" streaming on Peacock staring Regina Hall and Sterling Brown. I could not wait to see this movie long before the comments started rolling in. The church is messy and so are many folks that inhabit it. None of us are perfect! As I watched I saw many levels of wanting redemption before repentance. Notoriety before nobility. Marriage, self worth, and character all in question. From someone that has experienced church hurt, had my innocence stolen from someone I trusted when I was younger. I could relate on many levels. What happen to playing spades, pitty pat or gin rummy? Getting together with friends on the fly, no rules, no requirements just fun. That doesn’t happen as often as many of us would like, especially with work, married life and kids. Do you find it easier to make friends as an adult or when you were younger? That’s crazy because as an adult you can do more, more freedom now. So what’s up? Why can’t we talk to other humans while going out to eat, watching our kids on a playdate or just crying/laughing with a glass of wine or apple juice. We need it!
