He woke up in the Motor Cities notoriously gang and drug-riddled “7 Mile” neighborhood. Landau likes to say that he went from Almost Heaven to Little Baghdad overnight! After a series of dead-end jobs, run-ins with the police and a too-soon failed marriage, Landau eventually found himself homeless and sleeping in his car. Then, his voice became his calling card. “I loved to play basketball in Detroit, and these guys were good. Some of them went onto the NBA. But we were in the hood; it wasn’t anything to see guns drawn on the court after the game, so to keep people cool and laughing, when I’d dunk on someone, I’d sing a Frank Sinatra song like “Fly Me To The Moon” and everyone would laugh and put their guns away.” At the end of his rope, Landau tied a knot and pulled himself back up by auditioning for NBC TV’s “America’s Got Talent” with thousands of others. After months of competition, Landau emerged the winner, scoring a million dollars, a recording contract, and America’s hearts, and he’s never looked back. Landau’s Columbia Records debut album “That’s Life” reached number one on the Billboard Jazz Charts and was followed by “Christmas Made For Two”, “Landau” and his latest “Landau Live In Las Vegas” recorded during a performance at the legendary Caesar’s Palace. Purple Heart Honoree, Vietnam Veteran ~ Ron Drach was a Presidential Appointee along with my Mentor in College when I was at Howard University, He is a subject matter expert in military and veterans issues with more than 50 years of experience. After losing a leg as a result of combat in Vietnam, Ron medically retired from the U.S. Army in 1967 with a Purple Heart. Soon after, he focused his life on working to help his fellow disabled veterans. Following nearly three years with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), he joined the staff of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in 1970. Beginning in DAV’s Pittsburgh office, Ron rapidly rose to become the organization’s national employment director in 1975. He was the first Vietnam veteran to be appointed a director at DAV. In this post, he established the reputation he maintains today as one of the nation’s foremost authorities on employment issues impacting veterans and others whose lives have been affected by disabilities. Ron’s responsibilities led him to provide significant input into America’s response to the needs of veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder, homelessness, racial and gender discrimination and other socio-economic issues. He became a leading voice on questions involving Social Security disability benefits, as well as efforts to remove barriers that impede the lives and employment of people with disabilities. Many times throughout his career, Ron has appeared before congressional committees, offering expertise and recommendations for legislative change. After leaving the DAV, Ron was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (DOL/VETS). As the director of government and legislative affairs, he was responsible for working with congressional staff, the Department’s Office of the Solicitor and others within the agency on all legislative employment issues that affect the departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs. He is currently the president of Drach Consulting. Throughout the years, Ron has served on many commissions that strive to enhance the lives of disabled veterans and other people with disabilities. Ron recently served as a member of DOD’s Recovering Warrior Task Force after being appointed by former DOD Secretary Gates. He has also served on the governing boards of the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans, the National Resource Directory and others. Ron’s high-profile volunteer activity has included service as a team leader for the U.S. Paralympics Sitting Volleyball Team that competed in the 2000 International Paralympics Competition in Sydney, Australia. He was one of the founders and served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Wounded Warrior Project including four years as its president. He currently serves on the Boards of United Spinal Association and TransCen. He also serves in an advisory capacity to ThanksUSA and the DC Metro Business Leadership Network and chairs their Wounded Warrior Committee. Ron is also a co-author and co-editor of the Warrior Transition Leader Medical Rehabilitation Handbook. He is a frequent contributor to the DC Metro Business Leadership Network’s electronic newsletter. Ron lives in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., with his wife, Carolyn, a retired financial analyst for the Federal Reserve. The Music Historian in ME Loves to Talk to the Legends. Melba's NEW Music Compilation called "Imagine' Already Topping the American & British Soul charts. Melba Moore has done it all, twice. At the tender age of 10, Melba, she was introduced to music and that “I didn’t have any music in my life before my mother married my stepfather. He introduced music into our home and into my life.” From that moment forward, Melba began to develop her 5-octave, note-holding soprano that would soon bring audiences to their feet. Theater: The Newark, NJ Arts High School graduate started doing recording sessions after a chance meeting with singer/songwriter/composer Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson). That opportunity in the studio led Melba in the company of the Broadway musical “HAIR!” First in the ensemble of the show, Melba’s name was tossed into the conversation when actress Diane Keaton left the show and Melba took the female lead and broke all the rules, being the first Black woman to replace a white actress in a featured role on Broadway. The journey of Melba’s career took her to the lead of “PURLIE,” a musical adaptation of a play written by acting husband and wife pioneers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. That role and its musical soundtrack would earn Moore a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist in 1971 and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress. Television Melba Moore became so well known that network television offered her a summer variety series. Starring Melba and actor/singer Clifton Davis, who was starring on Broadway in another show, the duo, who were dating, were given the choice to bring their mass appeal into Middle America. Music "Read My Lips"—which later won Moore a third Grammy nomination (for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance), making her just the third black artist after Donna Summer and Michael Jackson to be nominated in the rock category. Hits like the #1 "A Little Bit More" with Freddie Jackson and "Falling," a hypnotic ballad that features one of the longest held notes in recorded history. Moore would also Produce & Record “Lift Every Voice And Sing” (the Negro National Anthem) at the behest of Dr. Dorothy Height, the president of the National Council of Negro Women, who wanted Moore to use her formidable talent to ensure that the song would reach new generations. When, a year later the group’s lead singer decided to leave, brother Rich was recruited. While performing at clubs in the New York area, they found themselves at the mercy of various house bands and decided to find a group of musicians who would become permanent members of the group therefore creating a self contained unit. The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS. Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Enjoying great success in Philadelphia, they attracted the attention of record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Into the recording studio they went, emerging with " Expressway To Your Heart " a song that would climb to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart and #4 on it's Top 100 list. The success of " Expressway " became Gamble and Huff's first "crossover" hit when it began to be played on both black and white radio stations. It's success enabled Gamble and Huff to reach the large audiences they sought in order to bring their " Sound Of Philadelphia " to the mass Market. In polls taken by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia’s City Paper, " Expressway" was voted the number one record ever to come out of Philadelphia. "Expressway " was followed by two other chart records, "Explosion In My Soul" and " Mission Impossible". Their first album, released in 1968, was " When The Whistle Blows ". A second LP, on Atco Records, called "Take Another Look" appeared in 1969. During this time, the group toured extensively throughout the U.S. appearing with many different types of artists...everyone from Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Janis Joplin, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Sly and the Family Stone and countless others. In 1974, the Soul Survivors reunited with Gamble and Huff to record their self titled album "The Soul Survivors" on TSOP Records. It was written and performed in a style that would define the unique sound of The Soul Survivors.The album produced "City Of Brotherly Love" which would show up on Billboard’s R&B Top 100 and become the group’s fourth charted outing. Harlem Globetrotter, Savannah GA County Commissioner - Founder Gator Ball ~ I had a great time talking with Harlem Globetrotter Legend Larry "Gator" Rivers. This is a Tribute to a Great Community & National Servant. Larry Darnell Rivers (May 6, 1949 – April 29, 2023), also known as Gator Rivers, was an American basketball player, coach, business owner, and civil servant Larry "Gator" Rivers, who helped integrate high school basketball in Georgia before playing for the Harlem Globetrotters and becoming a county commissioner in his native Savannah. He is a part of the Harlem Globetrotter Legacy Team that play nationwide. Larry played for the Harlem Globetrotters for 1973- thru the 1980's. He's traveled all over the world, been in movies, television specials, to The White House, The Queen of England, Hollywood Walk of Fame Georgia State Official, you name it! Rivers came home to Savannah and got involved in the community, volunteering in schools, promoting the rebuilding of neighborhood basketball courts and opening the non-profit youth mentorship organization Gatorball Academy to teach basketball. Rivers ran for the county commission in 2020. Larry, founder of Gator Ball Academy. FUBU, BRAVO, P.Diddy, BET ~ National Suicide Prevention Week is an annual week-long campaign in the United States to inform and engage health professionals and the general public about suicide prevention and warning signs of suicide. A Noted Film Director, Hezues R, who's worked with the likes of Sean P. Diddy Combs and Ciroc Vodka, Russell Simmons on successful media campaigns, plans to address the issue of mental health, through a movie called "Suicide Saint". Through all of this madness is one issue that has plagued people of color with very few having the courage to address – mental health. The World Health Organization (WHO) states over 800,000 people commit suicide every year – that’s one person every forty seconds. Also, the National Council for Behavioral Health notes that 46% of adults in the USA experience mental illness. In communities of color, according to the non-profit community organization, Mental Health America, out of 13% of Black Americans in the USA (according to the Census Bureau), 16% reported having mental illness – that’s over 7 million people (more than the overall populations of Chicago, Philadelphia and Houston combined). Finally, the Center for Disease Control published that suicides and attempted suicides cost the nation almost $70 billion per year in lifetime medical and work-loss costs alone. Not many filmmakers have been honored by one President of the United States, let alone two. Then again Hezues R isn’t your average filmmaker, as none other share the combination of his adversity and accolades , all the more reason why the entertainment industry is taking notice of this film protégé’s next project, which he claims will be his masterpiece: SUICIDE SAINT. If you know Hezues R, then you’ve likely been inspired, as his own life is bigger than a movie. At 22 years old, he survived a barrage of bullets fired at him point blank 22 times by three would-be assailants His survival is nothing short of a miracle but still not as miraculous as his meteoric rise in entertainment - from high school dropout and drug dealer to self-made creative titan. No college, mentor, backers or connections - just a relentless work ethic and pure undeniable talent. I LOVE Music History, I Get to go Back BEFORE my Time! Larry Chance was the driving force behind the group's formation and success. Chance grew up in Philadelphia and attended high school with Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, and Danny Rapp of Danny & the Juniors. But it was not until 1957 that he moved with his parents to the Bronx after high school, that his musical career took off. Chance formed a group at the Tecumsa Social Club, known as the Hi-Hatters. The group was Chance, Bob Del Din, Eddie Harder, Larry Palombo and John Wray. Later, in 1961, the Earls lost their original member Larry Palombo in an army skydiving accident. In 1961, Rome released the Earls' first record – "Life is But a Dream" (Rome 101 – 1961) The group then performed with Murray the K and on Dick Clark's American Bandstand show. In 1962, the group hooked up with Stan Vincent and recorded "Remember Then" for Old Town Records (Old Town 1130). It was a hit, peaking at #24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963. Chance co-wrote the group's next single The group scored another hit in 1963 on Old Town with "Eyes" (Old Town 1141). Later, a demo "I Believe" was released (Old Town 1149–1963) .I Believe" became a much bigger record from the 1970s onward as it received heavy airplay on NYC oldies radio. In 1989, they were on Broadway performing in the original production of A Bronx Tale, a one man play by Chazz Palminteri.A Bronx Tale. They received a BMI Award of Recognition of a Musical Work.
