So talk to us. What's one piece of advice you can give us this Monday morning, Kevin: Monday morning piece of advice knowing your listeners, know, the primary audience is going to be. Young practice owners, and I'll gear this towards those that haven't started a practice or bought a practice, basically haven't entered practice ownership. This is what we help doctors with. one piece of the big puzzle, right? We'll talk more about it in a bit, but demographics, we help doctors figure out like where to start a practice, where to buy a practice, if a location is good or not. We talk to a lot of nervous practice owners. So what I mean by that is. They're going to be first time business owners. They're going to be serious business owners. The general practice is a serious thing. It's a big production. And it comes with a lot of responsibilities. My advice would be just get used to not knowing what you're doing. Get used to asking for help, get used to doing things that are really unfamiliar and you have no idea how they work. The reason why I can relate to it is just because we started this business about 10 years ago now. Seems like a really long time when you say it out loud, but in those 10 years, just as a, a small business owner here at demographics, we've had to do a lot in terms of running a business, hiring operations, fulfillment of the reports and products that we offer, taxes. everything that comes with just being a small business owner. I would guess the idea is, don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid to not know, you're always going to be intimidated, but day. The course, why I want to loop this back is a lot of practice owners. They just won't jump in or they're scared to jump in. it's scary. You're never completely ready. We probably weren't completely ready to. Started business when we started a business, but just with time, with talking to people, figuring out, who, good for your team, who's bad for your team, all the world works....

So talk to us. What's one piece of advice you can give us this Monday morning? Addison: Yeah. So the one thing that I've found in the data recently picking through the business, the phone calls, uh, you know, new patients is that online scheduling leads to a huge increase in new patients. But it's not that they are actually scheduling through online. It's that once they go online and then they see that you have availability, they will still call the office. So what we found was that when you didn't have online scheduling, phone calls to the office dropped, even though web traffic was the same, Facebook, uh, you know, traffic was the same. But when you opened up online scheduling, people click that link and you, of course, you have people that click those links that they see, you know, the availability and stuff, and you have a significant portion that don't schedule. But we did see that even opening up online scheduling allowed for more phone calls to the practice just because you have online scheduling. So my big key piece of advice here is that. Even though you might not see a ton of appointments coming through your online scheduling, maybe it's only 10 a month, or maybe it's only 15. But that is still super important for the other 15 or 20 or whatever appointments that come through because of just people checking that online scheduling calendar and then still calling in. Michael: Interesting. How'd you figure that out then? Would you ask, was the front team asking, Hey, where'd you find us? How'd you find us? Addison: Um, well, basically I was just, I love to watch my phone data. I'm like, I'm always looking at, okay, Google. How many clicks are we getting over to our website from Google? How many are coming from Facebook? Um, so just watching all these trends. And then when my online scheduling broke, uh, that's when it was like,...

So talk to us. What's one piece of advice you can give us this Monday morning? Luke: So one piece of advice for dentists, orthodontists, or really a lot of business owners. Uh, I've had the pleasure of working with probably about a thousand dentists or orthodontists, uh, within the past 10 years. And I think a false belief and, it's probably taught or, you know, talked to, uh, amongst peers is you need to be able to scale your practice through acquiring locations and adding more doctors. And while that could be the case, I see people do this way too quickly. Absolutely. they'll have a low production practice. They'll also be carrying a lot of debt. and think I need more cash flow. I need to look for my second location. I need to look for another associate doctor. And I've actually seen a lot of practices go under this way because they become over leveraged. So I always tell people, focus on what you have.Grass is not always greener, build what you have, prove the concept, get your business to an A player, and then duplicate that. Nobody wants to duplicate a D player. You know what I mean? So if I have a business, it's not performing super well, it's probably not time to duplicate the model. Michael: Interesting. Okay.So then what's too quickly in your experience? If we're specifically talking about, let's go with like a general practice. Sure. And they're busy, too busy, right? So they're assuming, Oh my gosh, I need a doctor. I need an associate. I need a more hygienist. Right. Would that be too quickly? Luke: Well, it really depends on the specific situation. It could be time. But. Most of the time I've never met a dentist or orthodontist that's actually too busy. It's very rare and I'll explain why. The reason why we become too busy when running a business is we're doing the wrong things. Thanks. Very rarely do you talk to a dentist or orthodontist running the practice.I mean, again, this could be any other...

So talk to us. What's one piece of advice you can give us this Monday morning. Laura: So one piece of advice is. Really to make sure that you understand your contract with any, uh, your, any insurance company that you have chosen to contract with. There are a lot of rules that come with those contracts, and if you've chosen to be in network with a certain insurance company, they may have specific rules that you have to follow, such as you have to bill certain procedures out, even if they're not going to be covered. So you just want to make sure that you really understand your contract before you start committing insurance fraud. And it's little things like, You may have a certain procedure that's not covered by that insurance, and you may choose not to bill out that to that insurance company, because you've decided since it's not going to be covered, we're not going to bill it out anyway. But if your contract says that you should still be billing it out, you still need to make the insurance company aware that you did that procedure, even if you don't think you're going to get covered for it. Michael: Okay, no, that's interesting. That's interesting. And then. You said understand your contract. Are some contracts difficult to understand? Laura: They just vary. They vary a lot based on carrier and state. And especially once you start to get federal plans, it's more just making sure that you do read the fine print. Uh, some states say that you can't charge a patient if it's not covered. and some carriers say the same thing. So it's really just making sure you, You don't go outside of those lines and making sure that you are billing correctly, not only to your patient, but to the insurance company too. Michael: In your experience, Laura, like what is the most difficult company? I guess you feel like you've worked with when it comes to like, Oh my God, this is all in the contract. Are you serious? Kind of thing. Laura: I wish I could just say there's only one. I feel like every company is going to have their own quirks. and...

What's one piece of advice you can give us this Monday morning? Shahin: Well, first of all, thanks so much for having me. I appreciate the time and the opportunity. this notion we're talking private sector, we're talking practitioners that want to stay in the private sector. So we're not talking DSOs, we're not talking DPOs, we're not talking multiple practices and. multiple associates and 25 or 30 plus employees in a single small business, in a single dental practice, small business in the private sector. What you need to focus on is you need to focus on your financial numbers. The health of your business trumps everything else. and the more old school or, or seasoned dentists that, you know, got licensed in the eighties and the nineties, and maybe even a little bit later, Their thought process is that we need to focus on the patients and the patients come first. Well, I tend to say, yes, patients certainly have value when you're working in your business, but when you're working on your business, everything, is trumped by the health of your business. And that comes from your financial numbers. So If you are a private dentist in the private sector, you want to focus on understanding your financial numbers. And that's really most important because if you have a healthy business, you'll be much better capable and able to take care of your patients in your community at the highest quality possible. If you're in a stressed environment and you have financial stress in a business. And you have to try to meet payroll. You have to try to pay rent. It becomes a lot more complicated as far as the efficiency and patient experience of what, um, your patient and your community will experience at your practice. Michael: Okay. So then, break it down...

So talk to us. What's one piece of advice you can give us this Monday morning. Kiera: Oh, Michael, thanks for having me on. Um, so mine is going to be a little controversial and unconventional is to stop hating your problems and learn to love them, which I know feels a little funny to hear. And I'm going to tie it into numbers for you, but, um, as I was thinking about it, Our body is like when we have pain, like the natural tendency is to pull back from that pain and, and so I, I was thinking about this and I thought like there are things that cause like psychological pain as well. And those psychological pains are ones to like lean into and our brain is a web of even more nervous cells. And so like our natural tendency is like when there are problems, We want to pull away from it. We want to run away from it. We don't want this to be our problem. But the exact opposite, I believe, is what is needed to actually lean into them, solve them, because problems can create innovation. And I feel like, again, it's counterintuitive to what we think we should do, but stop hating our problems and truly learn to love them. Michael: What are some common problems that you see a lot of us, either as humans or as practice owners, tend to hate the most? Where we either ignore it or it bites us back in the butt later on. Kiera: Yeah. I would say like the number one thing I see with our dentists that we coach are numbers. I think numbers are just one thing. We don't want to look at it. We think that me knowing my numbers, me looking into my numbers, I am a dentist. I am an entrepreneur. I'm a business owner. I don't know numbers. I know dentistry. And so it's almost like even with my hands, like we're pushing back, we're pushing against that. But leaning into that problem, because so many of our problems actually stem from not knowing...

What's going to happen when I sent him the email saying like, ah, I don't want, sorry, man, I'm going in a different direction. today I thought it would be really useful to just, you know, hear from someone you know, like me, who's been in dental it now for 17, 18 years. Right. No matter how they word the response to you, no matter what they say, just always have in your mind, I own the server. I own my email address. I own my domain name. I'm just bringing up some things that usually are a part of transitioning from an it company, right? Maybe they have your domain name, right? Which is like, you know, dark horse tech, the dental marketer. com. Let's say they have that stored. You need to get that back. So, number one. You own it all, right? So you get to make the decisions. Now, compliance environment of dental, we all know, HIPAA, right? That also has to be kept in mind. And that's the piece of advice that.
