This week's shadow dance towards mutual dissatisfaction seemed to be the goal in resolving the debt ceiling crisis. How can the most powerful democracy in the world pull itself apart in such a predictable and demoralising way. Marion McKeone reflects on the bizarre disfunction of this and other happenings across the pond this week. DeSantis’ Campaign Launch Debacle - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone

5/26/2023
Did we just watch the ending or the launch of Ron DeSantis’s campaign for the GOP presidential nomination. The cyberspace dumpster fire event with Elon Musk was breathtakingly bad from the first glitch to the spluttering end. Marion and I discuss the Twitter space that announced his running which was way worse than any Zoom call with your parents. Viewership bottomed out at 100,000 leaving some to wonder if his chances of winning are all but gone. The only way is up now for DeSantis. As he begins his campaign in person, what new set of circumstances could hand him the win even after this debacle. A tornado, physical or legally hitting Trump, is not out of the question. We look at Ron’s chances alongside some other politicians in the running and where they fall in the GOP rankings. (Go to www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad to access the full.) How did one woman’s complaint lead to the banning of American poet laureate Amanda Gorman’s poem in a Miami school district? Marion discusses DeSantis’ regressive laws in Florida and how they’re impacting education, such as controlling the discussion of slavery in classrooms across the state. What’s going to happen with the debt ceiling? As Marion feels my eyes roll back into my head discuss this never ending snooze fest of a news story. Could this trigger a global recession? And do American’s want a president that is right and conciliatory or wrong and strong? As always, Marion explains. I’ll be doing my latest standup show in Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Armagh, Kilkenny, Naas, Birmingham, London and Tralee to why not grab a ticket while you can. The 1987 Mindset - Building Mental Toughness | Irishman Running Abroad

5/23/2023
In 1987 at the Cork City Sports meet, a seventeen year old Sonia O’Sullivan ran a time for 3000 metres that would have qualified her for the 1988 Olympics. It was the race that put her on the map. We go back to that summer’s evening when the legend in the making took a bus from Cobh to Cork to stomp her opposition into the ground. Injury adversity would strike soon after but it was this taste of success that drove her through the long weeks of rehab that would follow. How exaclty was the mindset of athletes in 1987 different today? What can it teach us about resilience and toughness? Is talking about problems the right answer to all problems or can we make them bigger by expanding the headspace they occupy? The Irishman Running Abroad Podcast is Ireland’s number 1 running podcast and each week examines a different aspect of training. This week we catch up with the GOAT as she travels to Washington to visit her daughter Sophie - an NCAA athlete on the rise herself. The “grand” forests and hills, the lunch box of champions and a trip around the Strava parishes for Sonia’s runners of the week make up the rest of this jam packed episode of Ireland’s favourite running podcast. — If you’d like to contact me, that is easy too. Crisis Averted Or Crisis Postponed? Rudy, Harry, Ron & Don - Irishman In American

5/19/2023
Were Harry and Meghan in a two hour car chase from the paparazzi or is this actual fake news? Marion weighs up the possibilities before moving on to the other near catastrophes of the week including the debt ceiling, Rudy Giuliani's legal troubles and the expiration of Title 42. What’s going to happen with the debt ceiling? Will the US Government come to a solution in time or are Kevin McCarthy and Joe Biden in the wrong place at the wrong time? Is can kicking the new national sport of America or will this recurring crisis ever be solved once and for all? The orange lead knows a thing or two about postponing an impending crisis even if that means flushing the documents relating to it down the jacks! What’s happening with the many lawsuits upcoming for former President Donald Trump? His best lawyer Tim Parlatore has had enough and left his legal team for good. As time passes is the case against Trump over classified documents indefensible? Marion breaks it down. It's a crisis that has been a long time coming. Are we finally about to watch downfall of Rudy Giuliani? Bombshell claims of sexual harassment of a former employee and accusations that he offered to sell "Trump-pardons" for $2million each have rained down upon him in a shit storm like no other. We have all you need to know in this week's chat. The one crisis everyone could see coming but nobody did anything about. (In the second half of of the show on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad : Did the border crisis fizzle this week. What is happening now that Title 42 has expired and the sky didn't fall. The horrendous overcrowding at the border and in migrant camps caused the death of a young girl died on Wednesday. What has to happen for Republicans or the Democrats step up to the plate? One man hoping for a crisis so big it allows him to swoop in will announce his candidacy next week. But what kind of candidate will Ron DeSantis be and will he be successful?) All Tuckered Out, Trump On The Run & Joe’s Standup Chops - Irishman In America

5/5/2023
What was the purpose of Donald Trump’s visit to Ireland? As Marion touches down in Dublin after her holiday, she puts forward her perspective on why Trump was visiting during the beginning of his civil rape trial in New York. Is Trump afraid to face E Jean Carroll as Joe Tacopina uses his thuggish methods to take on the trial. The most damning evidence against Trump in the trial being used is the infamous ‘Grab ‘em by the pussy’ Access Hollywood tapes. Marion gives a run down on what’s been said so far in the trial. Tucker Carlson is out of a job at Fox News after alleged racist text messages he sent. Was it the straw that broke the camels back or was Carlson on his way out when he said January 6th rioters were peaceful tourists? Where does Carlson go from here? Marion gives her views on potential networks that may take him on for less cash that are to the right of Fox News. Was there an assassination attempt against Vladimir Putin this week? Marion doesn’t think so. Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a drone strike over the Kremlin on Wednesday. Marion gives her views on what bleak motivation Russia may have for making the claim as she discusses how Ukraine is fading from the news agenda. What is the value of the Met Gala in times of economic crisis? We debate whether the parade of exuberant wealth and excess is necessary after the inaugural event celebrated the life’s work of Karl Lagerfeld on Monday. And while stars were making their way down the red carpet screen writers were preparing to strike for their rights in LA. Does Joe Biden have a writer’s room himself? After the White House Correspondents dinner it certainly looks that way. I look at the best jokes from Biden’s set as he and Marion discuss dinner’s of the past. With jokes about Tucker Carlson’s sacking and his age on the table, sleepy Joe has a few tricks up his sleeve. I am also on tour right now. Penn Relays 2023 & Runners’ Diet Made Simple By Sonia O’Sullivan - Irishman Running Abroad

5/3/2023
Sonia is back in Portland after a brief stop at a relay carnival like no other - The Penn Relays. We get some of the sights and sounds of the big event including Villanova's dramatic win in the men's mile relay and Marcus O'Sullivan's emotional post race interview. "The memories that are made last forever and they are magic" but at some point you have to come back to earth and get out to train again. That's the position many people find themselves in after a marathon. What better time to look the most basic part of how you run? The petrol you put in your engine is a simple way of looking at it but when it comes to food the choice is not as simple as petrol or diesel. In a world of experts everyone is an idiot. Sonia has a way of peeling back the nonsense and stripping away the silly stuff that might get in the way of your ability to make good choices at the fridge. Together we sift through some of the harder questions on this subject and some of the guiding principles she has espoused in her Irish Times articles over the years. Good fats, the traffic light system, the formula and the role of sugar in what a healthy life looks like, all come under Sonia's microscope in today's nutrition episode. We even have time to go around the Strava parishes to see which runners have stood out to Ireland's GOAT this week. Biden Visits, Trump Sues & Murdoch Faces The Music - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone

4/14/2023
Screwing up is a fact of life. Refusing to admit to it? Well that’s not in Joe Biden’s personality. This week his visit to Ireland and his All Black’s gaffe humanised the 46th US President in a way few events could. Sunday Business Post Washington Correspondent Marion McKeone dishes some insider information on the inner workings of NGOs and the real reason why Trump’s state visits were few and far between. What is Biden’s current public perception in the US as his approval rating takes a dive. We need a diagram for all of the civil and criminal lawsuits coming down the pipeline for former President Donald Trump as he sets his sights on suing his former lawyer Michael Cohen. Fox News is suing Rupert Murdoch and things are going pretty well for them so far. We check in on the latest developments. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones were expelled from the house Tennessee and reinstated this week. Marion explains why there is fear around these two high flying politicians among the old boys club in the Tennesee house of representatives. Marion gears up to attend the NRA convention this weekend where Donald Trump is the keynote speaker. Marion answer’s a great question from a listener about VP Kamala Harris. What You Won’t Know Until You Run A Marathon - Irishman Running Abroad With Sonia O’Sullivan

4/12/2023
In the final days before London 2023, I ask the greatest of all time what she learned from her first marathon. The answer I get might surprise you. Sonia famously ran and won Dublin on a whim for her first race after the 2000 Olympics. My final long run was an opportunity to gather some listeners training for Connemara, Boston and London. I recorded on the go and got some great insights from the far more experienced listeners of this podcast. How can I avoid the pitfalls of the first race joy. Vinny Mulvey joins me for the second half of the show to walk me through the plan for the next two weeks and explain how we can prepare our minds to prevent the wobble becoming a fall. Sonia is in Augusta for the Masters and she looks back on the experience of following Shane Lowry around the most fabled course in golf history. Marion tells us what it was like on the ground as George Santos and Marjorie Taylor Green protested outside the court. We discuss Trump’s diminished appearance, rare details from inside the court house and Trump’s attitude to it all. We also chat about the other impending cases headed Trump’s way, how this could affect his run for the Republican Presidential candidacy and how his MAGA base could be affected. In the Patreon portion of the show, the we discuss Marjorie Taylor Green’s 60 Minutes interview or as Marion brands it ‘one of the saddest days in journalism’ she’s ever seen. We get into the dangers of journalists not rebutting false claims. New York Congresswoman Alexandria OCasio Cortez’s calls for justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached and Marion breaks down why these calls have come to fruition. We discuss Robert F Kennedy’s Jr’s run for the Democratic bid or as Marion brands him the “crank and loser” candidate. To wrap the pod up, Marion gives a dose of positive news as Wisconsin elected a Democratic Supreme Court judge. Will this really make a difference? Marion thinks so. I am also on tour right now. Is Arresting Donald Trump Worth The Hassle? - Irishman In America With Marion McKeone

3/23/2023
Who is Alvin Bragg? What exactly is his case against Donald Trump? And is there any truth in the claim that this indictment is political given the number of run-ins these two have had with each other? Marion is here to shed light on the whole bizarre tale. In the first half of today's show we purely focus on what makes this case different from that of Fani Willis in Georgia, why so many are lining up to take a swing at Alvin Bragg and whether there is an argument for leaving the whole Stormy Daniels hush money to one side. Like everything related to this man, it's not as straight forward as it looks and the implications for crossing him will impact both sides of the isle. Later on Marion goes back to South Carolina for the re-opening of a case related to the convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh. We hear about the Gwyneth Paltrow skiing hit and run trial and get Marion's recommendation for the weekend. Jarzilla, my standup show has sold out everywhere we have taken it from Dublin to Clonakilty, now it's coming to the UK! Newcastle, Liverpool, Edinburgh & Glasgow are now all on sale. Tell your friends to grab tickets if you're not already going to Cork, Thurles or Galway.
