"Queering in Friendships": Rae McDaniel, Sex Therapist & Author of Gender Magic Returns

6/10/2023
This week Rae McDaniel is back. Rae is a non-binary gender and sex therapist who works primarily with transgender/non-binary/questioning folks transitioning their gender identity. We talk about how everybody has an opportunity to look at their gender identity and decide how they want to express it to see they want to present themselves. You might remember from our last episode they were writing a book. It's out now and called: Gender Magic—I read an early copy and loved it. We covered some of my favorite parts like how they see gender as a galaxy, human centered design thinking, how they approach decision making, naming fear rather than ignoring it, evolving personal style and the importance of kinship through “queering” intimacy in friendships, and much more. Mindful Space Design: Anjie Cho Returns

5/26/2023
You may remember Anjie from her several other appearances here over the years, most recently, the in-person feng shui consulting session she did for me in my apartment. This time, in her fifth appearance on this podcast, we give some updates from making the adjustments she suggested on our last episode, plus we talk about her new book, some factors she can pinpoint that impacted her career success, and I took some questions from others including space and home adjustments for relationships, and how to adjust and compromise when merging styles when moving in with a new partner. And the question she gets most often from couples: what to do when one person values consistency and familiarity and the other loves novelty and moving around furniture. Since 1999, Anjie has been designing spaces informed by the ancient practice of feng shui and tailored to each individual’s needs, which you’ll get a taste of in this. She’s been featured everywhere from The New York Times to Domino Magazine; she’s a New York State registered architect; co-founder of the Mindful Design Feng Shui School; and author of the book Holistic Spaces and the newly published Mindful Homes. Perfection Bubbles Burst: Musician Sam Burton on Collaboration, Tarot, Criticism & More

5/19/2023
This week I spoke with Sam Burton. He’s an artist originally from Utah now living in my neighborhood in LA. Sam came over a few weeks ago and we drank tea and talked about everything from how he began playing music, to how he approaches collaboration, craft, and creativity. After spending time studying Jungian psychology, he began reading tarot for himself and others. We spoke about how that impacts his songwriting as well as dream work, typology and Myers-Briggs. He’s candid about how “perfection bubbles” burst, the value of connection, and how constructive feedback given well has shaped his sound. We get into what he’s learned about sustaining a career in music, touring, maintaining a beginner's mind, external validation and criticism, his thoughts on love, nature, friendship, the music that shaped him, and more. I especially loved this one, Sam is deeply introspective, humble, easy to talk to, and wise. Let us know if you listen. As a journalist she’s covered food, nutrition, and health for more than 20 years. She's also a clinician working with people as a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in eating disorders. Her writing has appeared everywhere from New York Times to the Food Network, and she's written two books: 2019's Anti-Diet and her latest, The Wellness Trap. We talked about how she’s handling the praise and criticism of a large platform, what well-being practices she does participate in, and in a clip from an interview I did with her on her new show Rethinking Wellness we talk about how my episode on her first show, Food Psych, where we talked about orthorexia was one of the early influences for this new book. Collapsing Timelines with Holisticism's Michelle & Wallis

3/31/2023
This week I spoke with Michelle and Wallis, hosts of The Twelfth House and Good For U(?) podcasts. They had me on a few months ago and we had such a great conversation that I asked if we could talk more on this one. Michelle and I have been friends for ages, she’s the founder of Holisticism. Wallis joined the team a few years ago, and she, like Michelle, is so smart and cool as you’ll hear. We talk about the beginning days of Holisticism, a space that bridges the gap between the mystic and the realistic to make well-being more accessible to more people. We covered how it has expanded, including how they’ve built their team, advice for management, hiring, non-coercive marketing, failure, curation vs creation, prioritization as “squiggly brained" people, and podcasting as a medium (they both used the Podcast Kit to start their shows). And then we get into regret, string theory, breakups, collapsing timelines, undefined friendships, and much more. Let us know if you listen. What You Run From Chases You with Danielle LaPorte

3/18/2023
Danielle LaPorte is an author and poet living in Vancouver, Canada. I’ve been reading her books for years and this is her second time on the podcast. She has a way of articulating esoteric concepts in a way that goes down real easy for me, always has. We spoke over zoom a few weeks ago about what she’s been learning lately, self-help exhaustion, how non-duality is a creative act, self forgiveness vs self discipline, having the courage to make what she calls the 11th hour change, and how I discovered her in 2013 and her memory of that day. She quotes Krishnamurti saying “discipline is a tool that numbs the mind,” so we talked about that, our tendency to take on too many projects so we have to stay up late and eat crackers for dinner. We get into her thoughts on what she calls “tyrant time" vs "power time” and more. Her new book is called How to Be Loving, and I especially love her early book The Desire Map. Cale remembers his thoughts: musician Cale Tyson on rehab, recovery & our neighborhood feeling like high school...

3/10/2023
Cale Tyson is a musician originally from Texas, now living in my neighborhood in LA. He came by several weeks ago and we talked about our neighborhood feeling like high school, what he was like in high school, self-mythologizing, craving validation in projects (and beyond), and being allergic to earnestness…all before getting into his wild story of how he ended up going to rehab and getting sober last summer. He honestly explains what got him to that point with his trademark combo of self-deprecation and earnest humor. His new book, "Some Memories Are Only Thoughts”, just came out. We talk about that too as well as writing, sharing our work, and cringing at the process of it all. He’s a real gentle, sweet guy who makes me laugh and surprised me with a bunch of wisdom in this. The Big Bad Thing: Ryann Bosetti Returns (Part 3/3)

3/8/2023
This week is the third and final part of my conversation with hair stylist Ryann Bosetti. If you listened to the last two episodes you know she’s one of my favorite people to talk to so I wasn’t surprised we recorded for over three hours. I broke up that conversation into the last two episodes, where we talked about everything from how she got scouted to model at age 19 to her mystical thoughts on finding love in her late thirties to how she looks at her life through the lens of a fairy tale. If we look at her life from that storybook perspective, then this third episode is the chapter about a big, bad, wild situation that happened to her a few years ago. Recorded on a separate day, in this part Ryann shares the bad thing that happened to her, what she learned from that terrible time, how she healed from the tender spot she was left in, and how she now helps others as a result of her experience. So What Do You Do? with Mary Jelkovsky on Evolving Ambition, Body Image, Niches & Creative Output

2/11/2023
This week I spoke with author Mary Jelkovsky. Mary asked me on her podcast a couple months ago and when we recorded that interview we recorded one for Let It Out too. In the first half of this episode, Mary and I talk about how our difference in age impacts how we each use social media and technology, including how at only 16 she became an influencer as a fitness model, which led her to disordered eating, into recovery, and eventually to the work she’s doing now to help women accept their bodies and let go of food and body obsession. She’s written a best-selling book and accompanying journal, and over the past 5 years, she's been featured in TEDx, Teen Vogue, Shape, and Health Magazine. She also hosts the podcast Mary’s Cup of Tea, and the second half of this episode is part of my interview as a guest there. We talk about how orthorexia led me to create a blog that became a podcast about wellness, and how I eventually transitioned it beyond that niche to what it is now. We also cover the mindset (and fears) of a freelancer and within creative projects, the importance of evolution, and tools and resources I’ve found useful. I loved meeting her and these conversations, and hope to have many more—let us know if you listen. Show Notes: - **My one-on-one CREATIVE CLINIC is open with a few spots left! Anjie Cho Moves My Furniture & Makes It All Better

2/3/2023
In lieu of an interview, this episode is a recording of a session I had with interior designer, architect, author, and feng shui consultant, Anjie Cho. Recorded in person at my apartment, Anjie gives me a typical feng shui and design consultation as if I were a new client. Sessions always start with the question: what are your three wishes for your life? The wishes become a jumping-off point to find interior adjustments in the nine different home areas, which in my case were mostly related to increasing my assertiveness, connection, defined relationships, and creativity. You’ll hear what a session is like as well get some general interior insights from her you can use, but most of all you’ll hear a loose (too?) personal conversation between two old friends. Through answering her consult questions, I end up telling her everything that’s up in the air in my little weird life from dating to money…which I almost cut out but left it all in and hope at least one of you finds it entertaining. But mostly for context for the gentle, sweet, and spot-on advice she gives like only a friend who has known you for 10 years can. Then we move all of my furniture which honestly made me feel way better. This is Anjie’s 4th appearance on this podcast—since 2014 she’s advised me on each apartments I’ve lived in two in Michigan, two in New York, and now this one in LA. We tell how we met through our dear @stiggly and she tells how she got into design through her love of art and portrait photography. Since 1999, she has been designing spaces informed by the ancient practice of feng shui and tailored to each individual’s needs, which you’ll get a taste of in this. She’s been featured everywhere from the New York Times to Domino Magazine; she’s a New York State registered architect, co-founder of the Mindful Design Feng Shui School, and author of the book Holistic Spaces and the forthcoming Mindful Homes, which we should all preorder a hard copy of, it is useful. Let us know if you listened to this… AND if you have any interior design or feng shui questions about your space, leave them here and Anjie will be taking over this account soon to answer in the comments of this post on Instagram and Anjie and I will answer if we can! : )

Listen to This: Talk Easy

12/21/2022
I’m sharing a special preview of a podcast I’ve been loving for years, Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, from Pushkin Industries. Talk Easy is a weekly interview podcast, where writer Sam Fragoso invites actors, writers, activists, and musicians to come to the table and speak from the heart in ways you probably haven't heard from them before. Driven by curiosity, he’s had revealing conversations with everyone from Ethan Hawke to Cate Blanchett to Pedro Pascal to Questlove. In this preview, he sits down with actor, writer, and director Lake Bell, who shares her path to creating Inside Voice, her new audiobook. She describes growing up in Manhattan in the 80s, chronicling the world around her by tape recorder, and capturing those experiences into her 2013 film, "In a World..." And she shares how her voice has transformed in the past decade, the phenomenon of the 'sexy baby voice,' and the characters she hopes to discover in years to come. You can hear the full episode, and more from Talk Easy, at https://podcasts.pushkin.fm/talkeasypod?sid=out. PS Happy Holidays! we'll be back with long form episodes soon and in the meantime catch up, dive into the archive, listen to music, talk to each other, or talk to me. thank you for being here.

We're Spiraling: Money Shame, Comparison, Marriage, Kids & Different Timelines

12/9/2022
Instead of an interview today is a mashup of two episodes of Spiraling, the podcast I co-host with Serena Wolf about mental health. We started in 2019 where I’d walk to her apartment once a week and we’d talk and eventually started recording our conversations around anxiety. It’s been 4 years and now we live on opposite coasts, but we still record our conversations. The first half is from the middle of the current season, where we discuss navigating different timelines and expectations both from ourselves and from society. I picked this episode because I got messages from people saying it was comforting to hear where I am with being a single person navigating a freelance career so, even though it makes me cringe a little, I’m sharing it here too. The format of Spiraling is that Serena and I both share our “spirals” for the week, try to help each other talk through them, then discuss a topic: the one you’re about to hear is on comparison, money, the decision to have kids, and aging. All of this sounds real heavy but we’re mostly laughing and we always end with a segment called "high, higher, highest" where we share three highs of the week. The second half of this mashup is our goofy reintroduction episode where we each share favorite books, drinks, songs and more. Anna Fusco on Meeting Lord Cowboy, Community, Taking the Pressure Off & Much More

11/25/2022
This week on the program is artist Anna Fusco, who you might know as Lord Cowboy. Anna works across drawing, writing, and digital illustration. She’s done some big drawings, has a really cool poster and print shop, and writes a reader-supported newsletter called "Unsupervised" that is read by thousands of people each month, including me. She currently lives on the central coast of California and we caught up over zoom a few weeks ago. We discussed everything from over-processing experiences, care vs. worry, the accountability that comes from living in community, to how she met “Lord Cowboy” and ended up living where she is now. Anna and I connected after my friend Christine sent me one of her posters. It is one that I especially loved because it articulated something we all crave in some degree: connection and community. I’m far from the only person who resonated with the poster and in this Anna shared where she was when she wrote the words. Anna is so special and I loved speaking with her as much as I love her painting, drawings, and her entire online shop. Let us know if you listen. Charm Attack with Leona Naess

11/4/2022
This week I spoke with singer-songwriter Leona Naess who recently released an album titled Brood X after a family of periodic cicadas that, like her, reemerged in 2022 after 17 years underground. In the years since she released her last album in 2004, Naess had lived her own life “underground”— nesting, becoming a mom, and moving through the grief of losing both parents. Released in 2021, Brood X has themes of reemergence and rediscovery. In this conversation we talk about how she got into the music industry young with her hit song Charm Attack, the music industry in the 90s, processing grief, being cool vs. warm, and more.
