VP Mike Pence Makes The Case For 'Conservatism' & Himself

9/22/2023
The second Republican debate is coming up next week at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. The qualifications to make the stage are stricter this time, with candidates needing to meet higher polling and donor requirements. Six of the eight candidates from the first debate are projected to return, with North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson not yet qualifying. FOX News' latest power rankings show former Vice President Mike Pence in sixth place behind former President Donald Trump, and he joined the podcast to discuss the state of the 2024 race. He tells the Rundown that he is disappointed in his former running mate's decision not to debate and shares why he thinks he is the most qualified conservative in the race. The price tag of a four-year college degree continues to rise; in fact, the cost has increased by 79 percent since 1995. At the end of August, President Biden said his administration was committed to making a college education "an affordable ticket to the middle class" via loan forgiveness programs. He unveiled the SAVE plan—the administration’s second attempt at federal student debt forgiveness after the first was defeated in the Supreme Court. But college enrollment has dropped well below pre-pandemic levels, while trade school enrollment numbers continue to grow. Former White House economist and author of “Making College Pay,” Beth Akers, joins the podcast to explain why a new generation is questioning the value of a four-year degree, the factors boosting trade schools as an alternative path, and the threat that student loan forgiveness may pose in the long term. Plus, commentary by author and vice president of communications for Focus on The Family, Paul Batura. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Republicans Picking 'Populists' In Primary Race

9/21/2023
The Fox News Power Rankings are out, and they paint a picture of the 2024 GOP presidential races as a competition between populist candidates and traditional conservatives. The latest FOX Business polls show former President Trump maintains a large lead in the race both in Iowa and South Carolina. As the next GOP primary debate is set to take place on September 27th, the FOX Business polls show that voters have thrown more support for former Ambassador Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy since the first debate; however, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is still the number two in the race. FOX News Decision Desk Director Arnon Mishkin joins the Rundown to explain the increasing popularity of populist GOP candidates, the rising candidates in the race, and the factors allowing former President Trump to sustain a large lead over his challengers. Following the pandemic, more parents began seeking more options for their children's education instead of their local public school. This prompted several states across the country to enact legislation to provide different options and give parents the power of school choice. For example, Arizona provides vouchers for students to attend private schools, and Iowa offers an education savings account to eligible families to cover tuition, fees, and other education-related expenses. Brian Brenberg, co-host of "The Big Money Show" on FOX Business, is focusing on school choice as part of FBN's weeklong series on "Education in America." On the Rundown, he shares why more parents are turning to alternative options, explains the rise in charter schools' popularity, and breaks down how COVID-19 may have placed students behind academically. Secretary Buttigieg said that flight cancellations are down to pre-COVID days and touted thousands of infrastructure projects in all states. The state of air travel in the United States was the focus though, with the FAA without a head administrator and the looming government shutdown which would have a large impact on air traffic controllers. GOP Spending Fight Tests Speaker McCarthy's Leadership

9/20/2023
To avoid a government shutdown, Congress has until the end of September to pass a new spending bill. Currently, House Republicans are unable to reach a consensus on defense spending and move forward with a proposed short-term solution. Speaker McCarthy’s proposed GOP plan included approximately 8 percent in budget cuts, allocating no money for military aid to Ukraine but did provide funds to bolster border security measures. A procedural vote on Tuesday effectively defeated the GOP plan, with Republican lawmakers fighting internally about where spending is most needed. One of the few naysayers, Republican Congressman Matt Rosendale (R-MT), joins the Rundown to share why he is not worried about the possibility of a shutdown and why he lobbied against the continuing resolution. Seventy percent of Americans say transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete in sports on teams that match their birth gender. The issue has stirred controversy across schools in the United States, with some parents of female athletes voicing opposition to what they see as an unfair advantage, while more liberal countries have had the community argue this backlash is LGBTQ+ discrimination. The debate has the Biden administration in a difficult spot, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre telling FBN there is no "yes or no answer" for this issue. Meanwhile, 2024 GOP candidate Nikki Haley has called this the "women’s issue of our time," criticizing the Biden administration for allowing "biological men to compete in women’s sports." On the Rundown, FOX Business' Hillary Vaughn is covering this as part of FBN's weeklong series on "Education in America,'' and she breaks down the trans athlete controversy and how lawmakers are addressing these concerns. 9/19/2023
The United Auto Workers have been on strike for five days, with the union issuing demands for higher pay from the big car companies, who they argue are overpaying their executives while underpaying their laborers. UAW President Shawn Fain organized an aggressive, unprecedented strike on assembly plants at Ford, General Motor and Stellantis. As the labor negotiations continue, President Biden has voiced support for the strike while former President Trump has shared criticism of UAW union leadership. Fox Business' Jeff Flock joins the Rundown to explain Fain's plans with this strike and the public support for the union. Later, former Labor Department economist Diana Furchtgott-Roth breaks down the politics and policies that drove workers towards this strike. Even on a national scale, the teaching of these topics in classrooms has become a major conversation on the 2024 campaign trail. From Governor Ron DeSantis introducing Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin banning schools from teaching "divisive concepts like critical race theory," parents and politicians alike are paying more attention to the curriculum. On the Rundown, FOX Business' Edward Lawrence, who is focusing on the curriculum controversy as part of FBN's weeklong series on "Education in America," shares why some parents are criticizing the public education system and details how different states are challenging these issues. Americans Divided Over Biden Impeachment Inquiry

9/18/2023
House Republicans made major moves last week, as Speaker Kevin McCarthy directed the House to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Biden in light of his potentially corrupt business dealings. Additionally, the House Committee on Homeland Security continues investigating the injustices at the southern border. This week, they will host a hearing focused on the financial cost of the border crisis, examining how many American taxpayers now face overwhelming financial burdens due to millions of migrants illegally crossing the border. On the Rundown, Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Mark Green (R-TN) shares his thoughts on House Republicans' impeachment inquiry into President Biden & what he believes it could reveal. He also discusses how Americans facing higher medical bills, insurance rates, and even gas prices may all correlate to the mass number of migrants now residing in the U.S. and his efforts to keep "obscene" materials out of schools across America. Approximately fifty million children across the country were abruptly tossed into remote learning during the pandemic. Three years later, students and teachers now grapple with the effects of learning loss in the classroom. Test scores are the lowest they've been in years, with kids unable to meet standard grade-level requirements. On the Rundown, FOX Business' Lydia Hu, who is focusing on learning loss as part of FBN's weeklong series on "Education in America," shares why parents are frustrated with the "equitable grading" system and breaks down how learning loss may snowball into even bigger problems for future generations. The Effort to End Human Trafficking

9/14/2023
Yesterday’s House Homeland Security Hearing on migration and the U.S. Border covered one border issue that, despite its severity, is not commonly spoken about. A startling number of migrants being brought across the southern border are being sold into human trafficking by the same cartels or illegal enterprises bringing them to the U.S. With few connections or ways to make money, this has led to many migrants being trapped, and lawmakers like New York Congressman Anthony D’Esposito are determined to find solutions to fight this tragedy. On the Rundown, Rep. D’Esposito discusses how migrants are being trafficked in every state across the U.S., not just those on the border, and why lawmakers must stop “pointing fingers” and instead focus on finding solutions to protect the border. He also speaks about how law enforcement agencies should be supported to ensure they can catch the criminals behind these heinous acts. An escaped prisoner from Chester County Prison was on the loose in Pennsylvania for nearly two weeks until he was captured by authorities on Wednesday. Convicted murderer, thirty-four-year-old, Danelo Cavalcante was taken into custody shortly after 8 a.m. when an aircraft using thermal technology finally led state police and U.S. Border agents to his location. Former DOJ and FBI Special Agent, Nicole Parker, joins the Rundown to provide details into what mindset the criminal was in when he escaped and break down the behind-the-scenes of how law enforcement finally tracked him down. The Political Risks Of An Impeachment Inquiry

9/13/2023
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday gave the go-ahead for an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, after facing increased pressure from conservatives in the House. The investigation will focus on whether or not the president benefitted from his son Hunter Biden's foreign business deals, which have been under federal investigation since 2018. GOP Pollster and member of the FOX News National Decision Team Daron Shaw breaks down the political risks that come with this inquiry, how it compares to impeachment fights of the past, and if this latest development opens the door to a serious third-party candidate. A new gun suspension order has New Mexicans up in arms, as they claim the ruling is a violation of Second Amendment rights. The temporary suspension, put in place by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham was enacted under an emergency public health order, prompted by the recent fatal shootings of a 13-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy in recent months. Democrats and Republicans have criticized the ruling, claiming the suspension of open and concealed carry laws for Bernalillo County residents will not stop criminals from committing crimes but only prohibits law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves. On the Rundown, New Mexico State Representative John Block (R-51st District) discusses why this order unjustly violates constitutional rights, what complaints he's hearing from both Republicans and Democrats regarding the ruling, and why many believe this action could set back the creation of productive gun control laws.
