Helium Boys Podcast: USC-UCLA showdown, Nebraska goes down in Jayden Maiava's first start and jorts

11/21/2024
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down the Trojans getting back to .500 with a 28-20 win over Nebraska in UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava's first start in cardinal and gold. The podcasters also look forward, giving their thoughts on the upcoming matchup against UCLA. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun talking about his excitement about the rivalry game set to take plae this weekend. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to discuss some of the traditions missing from his coverage of practices leading up to Saturday's Crosstown Showdown and how Kyle Ford brought back some fire with his mentality about facing off against his former team. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. The way the ball comes off Maiava's hand and his velocity is discussed as well as an unprecedented streak of good fortune that was bestowed upon the Trojans against the Cornhuskers after having only bad luck for much of this season. Play calling and the run game headed by running back Woody Marks after his career-best performance also get a positive review as do defensive linemen Elijah Hughes and Kameryn Fountain along with others. On the flip side, the Trojans' saw issues with their health after an outbreak of flu cases cut through the locker room. The return and departure of Jacobe Covington as well as the limited playing time of Ja'Kobi Lane are also focused upon in the Stock Down portion. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing Anthony Lucas, Zachariah Branch and Lane. There are also recruiting and hypothetical retention inquiries, and a fun question about who could/should become USC's new Big Ten rival. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and then the viability of some famous people wearing jorts. Heading into rivalry week the Trojans are fighting on through the flu

11/20/2024
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the badly needed victory over Nebraska and the successful debut of quarterback Jayden Maiava. The victory brings USC to 5-5 with a victory needed over UCLA or Notre Dame to secure a bowl game. First up, the Trojans are heading to the Rose Bowl to take on crosstown rival UCLA. The Bruins had won three-straight in the Big Ten including two on the road before falling to Washington on Friday. In the off-season Lincoln Riley stepped up the stakes in rivalry by hiring away defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn and signing safety Kamari Ramsey, cornerback John Humphrey and wide receiver Kyle Ford. USC's preparation for the game has been impacted by a bout of the flu that has spread through the players and coaches. On Tuesday Riley addressed the media, talking about what he and the team have been going through this week and the hope that they will be fine by Saturday night. The guys also talk about some of the interesting matchups between the Trojans and the Bruins and give their thoughts on how this one will play out. Tunnel Vision: Recapping USC's 28-20 win over Nebraska plus left tackle Elijah Paige joins the show

11/17/2024
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Jack Smith are in studio recapping how the Trojans got an important 28-20 victory over Nebraska and the positive first start for UNLV transfer quarterback Jayden Maiava. After losing four of the last five games, the Trojans were able to get back on the right track and finished the game strong against the Cornhuskers. Now USC just needs one win over rival UCLA or Notre Dame to become bowl eligible and get an extra couple of weeks of practice to help prepare this team for next season. On the defensive side of the ball the Trojans really played well, allowing only 13 points to the Nebraska offense and only 10 points that were not the direct result of USC turnovers. Before the guys give their thoughts on the game, they welcome in the USC left tackle Elijah Paige who played one of his best games against Nebraska, helping Woody Marks run for 146 yards and allow Maiava to complete over 71% of his passes. The interview with Paige was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes. Coach Harvey Hyde on USC's much-needed win, the play of Jayden Maiava & huge QB flip

11/17/2024
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together with the rare opportunity to talk about a big Trojan football victory, following USC's 28-20 win over Nebraska Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. Both teams came into the game desperate to get a win, with the Huskers losing three-straight and the Trojans dropping four of the last five. The victory brings USC's record to 5-5 with a win over rival UCLA in the Rose Bowl or Notre Dame in the Coliseum necessary to qualify for a post season game. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on how USC played following the bye week and what he liked and didn't like from the offense after head coach Lincoln Riley inserted UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava as the starting quarterback. Maiava started off slow but then got things going, finishing with three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, but also an ugly pick-6 and fumble deep in USC territory. Hyde talks about his arm strength and his ability to extend plays and pick up yardage with his legs, and how all of that helped Woody Marks and the run game get going. Defensively this USC defense did its job against a struggling Nebraska offense. The Trojans had five tackles for loss including two sacks and picked off a pair of Dylan Raiola passes including the final play of the game. Coach talks about what he saw from that side of the ball and how that can translate to the final two games of the season. CLICK HERE for 30% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! Tunnel Vision: Previewing USC hosting Nebraska, an extremely important contest for both programs

11/15/2024
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") were hoping for a chill show following the bye week but nothing is ever chill when you cover the Trojans. The guys will try and focus on previewing this extremely important matchup with Nebraska, with both teams fighting desperately for the privilege of playing in a bowl game. The Huskers are riding a 3-game losing streak, the second-straight Big Ten opponent to have entered the Coliseum after losing three-straight, while the Trojans have dropped four of their last five games. They will also discuss the major offensive changes both programs made during the bye week, with USC benching Miller Moss in favor of Jayden Maiava at quarterback and Nebraska promoting newly hired offensive analyst Dana Holgorsen to offensive coordinator, calling plays for freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola. The early signing period is quickly approaching and the Trojans top-10 recruiting class for 2025 is already taking hits, most notably the de-commit of four-star edge rusher Hayden Lowe. The guys weigh in on this recruiting failure and where USC can go from here to help bolster the defensive line through high school recruiting. USC is also dealing with a minor distraction after being issued a 1-year probation and $50,000 fine from the NCAA for allowing analysts to coach players during 2022 and 2023. USC put on NCAA probation, throwback uniforms plus a 4-star defensive de-commit

11/13/2024
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the breaking news that the USC football program was put on a one year probation and fined $50,000 by the NCAA for illegal coaching by some analysts during 2022 and 2023. The guys talk about this slap on the wrist from everyone's least favorite institution and if these penalties actually mean anything for Lincoln Riley and his Trojan football program. During the live version of the show, news broke that 2025 4-star edge rusher Hayden Lowe had flipped his commitment from USC to Miami. In real time Ryan and Connor give their thoughts on this bad turn of events for USC football recruiting, including how Lowe talked to Connor after his game on Friday and reaffirmed his commitment to be a Trojan. They also discuss the Trojans pulling the trigger on alternate uniforms heading into the Nebraska game, throwing back to the 1972 unis from the John McKay era. Speaking of Nebraska, both USC and the Huskers are desperate for a win so Connor and Ryan talk about what the Trojans can expect to see on Saturday afternoon in this Big Ten Coliseum clash. The guys also share their thoughts on the passing of former USC head football coach John Robinson and longtime poster on the Peristyle known as nogales. Triple-Double Podcast: Assistant Anthony Ruta joins the show after USC men & women basketball teams start 2-0

11/11/2024
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the 2-0 starts of the USC men's and women's basketball programs and looking forward to the next week of action including a ACC/Big 10 matchup with Cal. Also special guest USC men's assistant head coach Anthony Ruta comes on to discuss the first week of action in the Eric Musselman era. He talks about the positives and negatives of the first two games, discusses the design of schedule building, including what the Trojans were trying to do with their schedule this season, and breaks down how Musselman and his staff try to teach players in a variety of different styles to be able to reach each player better. Shotgun and Connor look at where the men and women's programs stand after the first week of play and preview the upcoming week that will see four games played at the Galen Center between the two programs. The Women of Troy welcome a CSUN squad that is one win away from tying its total from last season when it went 3-27 losing 26 games in a row. They then play a unique afternoon matinee matchup against Santa Clara on Friday. The USC men continue their battle with the state of Texas, facing off against another UT school in UT-Arlington on Wednesday before a strange-to-say ACC-Big Ten matchup against previously familiar foe, California, Sunday evening. Helium Boys: Playcalling woes in Washington, Jayden Maiava time and Shotgun invades Paris

11/7/2024
Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down another disappointing USC loss, this time with a slightly different script but with all the familiar elements as the Trojans held a fourth-quarter lead on the road only to relinquish the lead and not be able to find the end zone for the game-winning score. They also look forward, giving their thoughts on what to expect following Lincoln Riley's decision to bench Miller Moss in favor of Jayden Maiava. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the anniversary of a classic Helium Boys road trip as well as the Women of Troy getting a gutsy season-opening victory in the Aflec Oui-Play event in Paris. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to tell an epic story of trying to find food after the conclusion of the USC-Washington game. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Zachariah Branch had one of his best games this season while young pass rushers Sam Greene and Kameryn Fountain continue to earn more opportunities. Maiava's stock is obviously on the rise as he takes over the reins of the USC offense and the Trojans' run game, when given a chance, continues to excel recently. On the flip side, the Trojans' saw some weak points at right tackle as well as one of their cornerback spots. Those and Riley's playcalling are focused upon in the Stock Down portion. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing young players that could become starters next season and USC women's basketball's dramatic win in Paris. 11/6/2024
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the breaking news that USC head coach Lincoln Riley has made a move a quarterback, naming UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava the starter heading into the Nebraska game. Then after practice on Tuesday Riley made it official, saying that starting Maiava was the best thing for the team. Tunnel Vision: After USC falls to Washington for loss No. 5, 2024 is officially a wasted season

11/3/2024
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back from Seattle where they will once again discuss everything that made the road trip a nightmare for the Trojan football team and their fans. After the 26-21 loss to Washington, USC falls to 4-5 on the season, 0-4 on the road and has lost four of its last five games heading into the bye week. Head coach Lincoln Riley has as many losses (10) in his last 16 games at USC than he had in his entire Oklahoma career (55-10). After the game Riley continued with his message that the team is doing a lot of great things and they are simply one play away from turning a loss into a victory. While that is technically true, the common dominator is that being close to winning isn't good enough, especially when the schedule was favorable and some of those losses shouldn't have been close enough to go either way. The guys talk about what they saw and heard up in Seattle and try to make sense of this team fighting for bowl eligibility instead of a berth in the expanded College Football Playoffs. What is left for USC to play for? Wins over Nebraska plus rivals UCLA and Notre Dame would be nice, but it wouldn't erase another (at least) five-loss season in year three of Riley's tenure. This campaign started with great promise after beating LSU in Las Vegas, but four losses in the last five weeks officially makes USC football 2024 another wasted season. USC Triple-Double: Previewing the 2024-25 USC men's and women's hoops season & special interview with Beth Burns

11/2/2024
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing the upcoming season for the USC men's and women's basketball teams with the Women of Troy a national championship contender and the men's team coming off an exhibition win over a top 10 Gonzaga team. But first, a special guest joins the show as USC women’s associate head coach Beth Burns comes on to discuss what she expects this season after the Trojans revamped the roster with the additions of the No. 1 transfer in the nation, Kiki Iriafen, and fellow Pac-12 transfer Talia von Oelhoffen along with the No. 1 high school recruiting class in the nation, led by Etiwanda (Calif.) guard Kennedy Smith. Burns also talks about how different preparation was leading into this season with the addition of seven freshmen compared to last year having three Ivy League graduate transfers that already had a ton of collegiate experience. Shotgun and Connor then break down the Women of Troy seeking a trip to their first Final Four since 1986 along with a completely new USC men's roster with 13 incoming transfers/freshmen under new head coach Eric Musselman. The podcasting duo give three things they are looking forward to from both squads and two things they still have concerns about as the season is about to begin. Tunnel Vision: USC is looking for its first road win of the season, taking on the Washington Huskies

10/31/2024
On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio for a Halloween edition of the show, previewing the extremely important game between the USC Trojans and the Washington Huskies. Both programs are 4-4 and both need a victory for a realistic shot at making a bowl game and finishing the season on a high note. The Trojans will have their hands full trying to play in Husky Stadium, where UW has an 18-game winning streak going. USC hasn't won a true road game in over a year and would love to finally secure a Big Ten road win, even if it comes against a familiar Pac-12 foe. Washington's strength lies in its pass defense, ranked No. 1 in the FBS. USC likes to throw the ball with Miller Moss but Lincoln Riley could find more success with Woody Marks and the ground game up in Seattle. The Trojans could get some of their injured defensive players back for this game as they try to keep the Huskies offense at bay. UW is one of the top teams in FBS in terms of total offense, but for some reason Washington struggles in the red zone, making point production much lower. The Dawgs are also terrible on special teams, which could provide an opportunity for Zachariah Branch and Makai Lemon in the return game. Can the Trojans build on that Rutgers win heading into the Washington trip?

10/30/2024
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the Trojans ending their 3-game losing streak with a 42-20 victory over Rutgers on Friday night. The Scarlet Knights aren't a great team, but USC was desperate for a win and needed to get back to .500 with a chance to build on that in the final third of the season. This weekend we will see if the Trojans can keep the momentum of that win going, heading to Seattle to take on the 4-4 Washington Huskies in the final real road trip of the season. It should be an interesting matchup with UW sporting the best pass defense in the country to try and counter Miller Moss and SC's receiver corps. The Huskies play much better at home than on the road and will be looking to shake off their own two-game losing streak with a win over a former Pac-12 foe. The guys also talk about why head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to close practices the remainder of the season is concerning, as this team has plenty of problems that need to be addressed and having reporters watching 10 minutes of stretching isn't one of them. Coach Harvey Hyde talks about USC's performance against Rutgers and how important it was for the Trojans to get back into the win column

10/28/2024
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde have a chance to talk about a Trojan football victory after USC took care of business by beating Rutgers 42-20 Friday night in the Coliseum. Coach feels like the Men of Troy needed this win badly after losing three straight and sporting a losing record for the first time in Lincoln Riley's head coaching career. The Scarlet Knights were an overmatched opponents and both teams were dealing with significant injuries, but USC did what it needed to do and put up good numbers that the program can build upon heading into the final four games of the regular season. It was a unique Friday sports night in Los Angeles with just a few miles of freeway separating USC hosting Rutgers, the Lakers hosting the Phoenix Suns and the Dodgers hosting the New York Yankees. Coach talks about all that was going on in the City of Angels and the part the Trojans played in the historic night. Coming out of that game, players were smiling again and that is very important for the psyche of a young student athlete. They could go to class on Monday with their heads up and there is more joy in the locker room and at the football facilities knowing that the team got an important victory. Following the win, the fans seem a little more subdued and less enthusiastic, likely a combination of the caliber of opponent, the late Friday kickoff and the lost expectations of what could have been a promising season after USC beat LSU in the opener.
