This weeks show includes tracks from a new compilation of 78s about to be reissued on Planet Ilunga and originally released on the Congolese label Ngoma in the 50s and early 60s (I havent found them repeated on any of the other Ngoma compilations from this period), and a revisit to Sam Mangwana’s Maria Tebbo with a 1948 version from Angola’s Georges Edouard and Manuel d'Oliveira. Also new reissues from just before the Derg took power in Ethiopia after Haile Selassie in the mid 70s, a new release from UK's crew Onipa called Off the Grid, and more from Rocky Marsiano and the Lusafrican sound

New live release from one of Ethiopia’s major pioneers, Hailu Mergia, and from Mali singer Sadio Sidibe is featured on a new album by Israeli producer Sangit and more from Idrissa Soumaoro. It’s a joy to revisit 70s South African guitar genius Allen Kwela on a new Matsuli reissue that looks at his jazz influence on the scene. The late Hugh Masekela also makes a return visit to the show with an Amapiano mix, and Senegal’s drum collective Assiko Golden Band de Grand Yoff kick up a storm. Beautiful and poetic new release from Sawa Sawa from Sudan, and Analog Africa get to release some forgotten master tracks from Mali’s Leon Keita. The Pico guitar scene in Colombia’s Atlantic coast brings Viva Makale, and Congo’s Titi Bakorta now based in Kampala keeps things up to date.

Aracataca // 28 Aug 2023
8/31/2023
**500th EDITION** Aracataca, the UK's first 100% authentic Latin music radio show which began celebrating musica latina on London pirate radio in 1984, clocks up 500 editions on totallyradio, where it was re-launched in July 2004. In the 500th edition, John Child celebrates the life of Latin and "world music" DJ, compiler, columnist and broadcaster Dave Hucker, featuring cuts by the Fania All Stars, Ray Barretto, Joe Bataan, Willie Bobo, Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez and Charanga La Tapa from his trailblazing compilations. Fittingly, this edition of Aracataca is posted on totallyradio on Bank Holiday Monday, when Dave would have been deejaying at Latin Rave at Notting Hill Carnival. To further mark Notting Hill Carnival 2023, John pays tribute to the pioneering female soca, calypso and soca parang artist Singing Francine and plays tracks by Hugh Masekela ft. Machel Montano and Siparia Deltones and Brother Valentino. [Photo of Dave Hucker deejaying at the Latin Rave at 2022 Notting Hill Carnival taken by Mish Aminoff Moon.]

The Lewes Con Club near Brighton on Wednesday 23 August, Shambala Festival on 25th, London on the 26th, and Norwich Arts Centre on the 27th.
